Perfect book for MySQL and even databases in general,
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Managing & Using MySQL, 2nd Edition (Classique Us) (Taschenbuch)
This book is one of the best database book I've ever read. It starts with an introduction to MySQL (including history and installation). The introduction is followed by a very nice overview to SQL in general and according to MySQL. Then there is larger part of database administration - also including general and specific aspects to MySQL. The authors also explains very well the topics Performance Tuning, Security and Database Design. (Of course, they also don't lose the overall view there).
To give programmers many practical hints how to work with MySQL specific chapters for Perl, Python, PHP, C and Java are added. Additional it is also explained how to extend MySQL with user defined functions. At last a voluminous MySQL reference finish the book.
The book is also very easy to read with a lax and enjoining language. I could neither find a spelling mistake nor a typographic one.
There's not much I missed at this book. Perhaps some more examples would be nice, but that's not really a problem as the explanation are so good, that you needn't many examples. The only thing I really missed are the new transaction features of MySQL. (Of course, they are too new to be handled by this book). However the author also explains transaction handling in general and what was planned to be done with MySQL when he wrote this book. So it wasn't a big problem to understand the according web sites.
