Rezension bezieht sich auf: Soulless (The Parasol Protectorate) (Taschenbuch)First off, if you're in doubt, do not hesitate, go ahead, buy it, read it. You will not be disappointed but entertained throughout the threehundred-something pages. Carriger's writing style is great, she has a sizeable vocabulary and is never afraid to use it. She knows how to properly do funny and entertain the reader. The characters are well-developed and credible (in such confines as a book about werewolves and vampires is wont to offer), the plot is logical throughout, and although it sometimes is predictible, I never once felt bored.
Why just four stars then, you may ask, and rightly so. Near the end of the book, I found the main character's actions not quite...shall I say real? If a good friend is in mortal danger, I personally would not be able to make out with anyone, no matter how attractive. That little lapse in consistency bothered me and it is why I wouldn't give five stars which, otherwise, this book more than deserves.
In a nutshell: Soulless is for those who are looking for romance that is not overly annoying, mixed with urban fantasy around 1850 (or thereabouts? sorry, not all that great with the dates, fellas) alongside steampunk told with a witty humorous and fresh voice. Also, if you're looking for women who aren't total love-drunk itiots, this is your book (yup, apart from the scene mentioned above). Also, let it be known that I much appreciate the author's research in that time's fashion; it is such details related with that subtle skill of penmanship that makes a book come to life in the reader's mind.
