A Real Gem in the Classical Catalogue,
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Das Wohltemperierte Klavier (Ga) (Audio CD)
Although I cannot understand German, but I know definitely all reviewers here have given a lot of positive appraisal words. The rendition of Friedrich Gulda is so celestial that I can't help to share my feeling with other reviewers here and all the Gulda fans.
The Well-tempered Clavier has two books and each book comprises twenty four pieces of `Preludes & Fugues'. Any piece among these forty eight preludes & fugues is a real challenge for the player, no matter shorter or longer in terms of playing time.
His performance, taped in early 1970s when Gulda was at his peak, is a unique execution with unbelievable clarity, exquisite nuance portrayal, just right pace and masterly control on dynamics from the pianissimo through the fortissimo. All these factors make his reading so revealing as well as persuasive in presenting the grandeur fabric of Bach's masterpiece as if the music is endowed with vivid life, evolving and growing spontaneously, and the player doesn't interpose between the listener and the music any more. Moreover, Gulda's staccato technique is pretty fascinating.
Friedrich Gulda ranks absolutely among greatest Bach exponents in the world, such as Edwin Fischer, Sviatoslav Richter and Glenn Gould. Oh, surely, the harpsichord version from Wanda Landowska is another miracle. It's a great pity for me not listening to Rosalyn Tureck's interpretation yet.
Recommended without reservation!
