Return of the "Fantasy" novel,

Rezension bezieht sich auf: A Storm of Swords, Part 2: Blood and Gold (Taschenbuch)
For many years, I have abandoned the Fantasy genre for lack of brilliancy (alas, no more Zelazny's). However, with Martin's Ice and Fire series, Fantasy can hold its head high again. The IAF world is similar to what one expects of a European type middle ages knights and kings and queens tale but with an extra portion grandeur and intrigue. Fratricide, regicide, betrayal, villainy and alliances, likely and unlikely, characterize the stories within the Story. Like the other books in the series, the narratives contains chapters centering on one character at a time. Often this type of format has high and low points as we are reading chapters with characters that we are more or less interested in. In this last book, as in the others in this series, the characters do not necessarily inspire devout loyalty or revulsion as there seems to be no absolute good or evil, but through the unrelenting amount of action and suspense one is gripped from beginning to end from all aspects of the story. We are only given tantalizing clues as to the "big picture" and must put together the bits and pieces from each character's developing tale. NOT for the faint of heart, the sometimes brutal fates and injustices that occur, especially in this last book, serve only to sharpen our appetites for resolution and satisfaction. Male as well as female characters are thoroughly believable and act of their own accord and motivations, usually not swayed by any sense of greater good or noble purpose. My only complaint is that perhaps the brutality is somewhat overdone, but is certainly in keeping with the force and pace of events. The influence of occult and magic will likely increase in the next installment, but for those looking for more scorcery than swords, this series is definitely not for you. I have abandoned family, job and household this week to read Book 3, parts I and II (in 3 days only!) and am somewhat glad that the next one will not be out until next year. Brilliant and suspenseful writing. I highly recommend these books!
