For those interested in football: not at all bad!,
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Fever Pitch (Taschenbuch)
I had seen the movie years ago. Normally I don't like reading a book once I have seen the movie, but - getting lost in a book store at Heathrow Airport - Fever Pitch was the only one that I hadn't read yet and that vaguely attracted me. It didn't take long for me to realise that the book has very little to do with the movie, and that was good news. I enjoyed the read, because it is more an essay on english football in general (and Arsenal especially). Besides, Hornby managed to describe the life of a football fanatic very lively, with all its frustration and sadness. Yes, it is pathetic to take a day off in order to travel to a meaningless away match on a Wednesday evening, but now I begin to understand why football supporters do this.
A reader who is expecting the movie like love story in the shadows of Highbury will be disappointed. There is of course not much of a plot. Highlights are Arsenal playing the FA Cup final at Wembley, Arsenal winning the league, Arsenal losing ... Sounds boring. However, the text is anything but dull or boring. It is the wisdom of man who has spent a considerably large amount of life on football grounds and who - unlike many other retarded football hooligans - knows to analyse the scenes, and to make an interseting text out of it. Finally, the pages on Hillsborough are about the best I ever read about the disaster.
