Joachim's life changes in the blink of an eye when he gets hit by a car while seeing off his soon to be wife Cecilie. When he wakes up again the doctors tell him that he will remain paraplegic for the rest of his life. Joachim decides to break up with Cecilie against her own will to spare her to marry a disabled man and withdraws back into himself - bitter and depressed. All attempts of Cecilie to stay by his side are fruitless...Joachim expressively forbids her to visit him again. Cecilie is lonely and begins a friendship with Niels which is not only a doctor at Joachim's hospital, but also the husband of the woman who was involved in Joachim's car accident. Niels and Cecilie's relationship grows closer and soon they're having an affair...
Open Hearts is one awesome piece of Danish cinema about how ridiculous and hard life can be at times. The cast (Sonja Richter as Cecilie,Nikolaj Lie Kaas as Joachim, Mads Mikkelsen as Niels) couldn't have been better and the story is very touching and reflects almost philosophically about relationships and life while it never feels like an intellectual overstatement, but can be described as a very truthful story about three people who're looking for a way out of their personal crises and the existential perplexity they are in.
However, the DVD is a catastrophe because the image editing is the worst and one has only two options to watch the movie: either in Danish without any subtitles or the dubbed German version. It is beyond me why. It wouldn't have been that hard to just provide English or German subtitles for the Danish version. That's the reason for my decision to give it only 3 stars instead of 5.
