The book can be separate into two storylines. First, the reader is taken to wartime France during the First World War. The second story takes place in modern day London. The two stories are interwebbed by a painting and its journey which the reader slowly discovers.
The first story was entertaining and captivating. However, Jojo Moyes could have researched better when it comes to historical accuracy. Somehow the story seemed a bit off and highly unrealistic. But this dislike has to do with personal taste, so some (the majority?) won't mind certain wrongs.
The link to the modern story was fine, but I disliked the main female character, as she appeared to be self-absorbed. Not being able to let go of a painting because she connects it to her late husband emotionally, yeah I get it - but come on!!!- it gets a bit daft after a while.
In the end, I left out a number of pages because I looked for a resolution to the war-story, thereby losing interest in the second storyline.
