Major Pettigrew's Last Stand,

I bought this book for my English Conversation Group". It is an ESL class and some of them lived in England. Most of them enjoyed it immensely as most foreigners love to poke fun at other countries' generalizations.
The story in its self is interesting enough and I feel Ms. Simonson had a lot of fun writing it. However, for me it became quite boring through constant clichés. Every single character, the Americans, women, Muslims, ecologists, aristocrats, business men, you name it, is put into a definite stereotype. Everyone in this area of England regardless of their own stereotype seems to have some bigotry running in their veins, and they are not considerate enough to try to conceal it. Mrs. Ali who was born and bred in England, is herself, as usual, the kind, patient and understanding person that also becomes a constant victim of bigotry from the locals and even her own family. I guess it is an English senior citizens a la "West Side Story".
