Rezension bezieht sich auf: Hero in the Shadows: A Waylander the Slayer Novel (Hors Catalogue) (Taschenbuch)this was the first gemmel book I ever read, so I can't compare with other works of his, just judge this book by its own merrits.
it reads very swiftly; the author's prose is accessable, unobstrusive, and refreshingly unpathetic (for heroic fantasy).
yet quite a few things about it marred my reading-experience enough to bring the score down to a just-above-average three:
first and foremost, the whole concept of this book is excessively reminding of frank miller's "the dark knight returns", with the old, "retired" hero finding himself only superficially reluctantly cought up by his past, and the need to don the asassin's spandex pants again... =/
the more I read about waylander, the deeper an insight I got into him, the more restless his soul became obvious to be. with his prolonged livety not being considered much of a pleasure by him, and the seeming satisfaction with his uppermost-class lifestyle and ways being just as much a mask behind which he hides as with batman/bruce wayne's playboy-lifestyle.
then, I always liked batman, and I like this aged waylander, too, maybe _because_ I've never read much about the younger him.
the graver complaint though is concerning the plot of this novel:
furthermore, many a character's agenda remains half or almost fully unexplored, giving the reader disapointment over unfinished sub- and byplots he might have thought to have detected.
in summary, if you care more about interesting characters and characterization than logic plot and coherent atmosphere, go right ahead and read it -- you should not be displeased.
for everyone else, there's worse books out there, but quite a few better ones as well...

Maybe you should read the other Waylander novels first. The scientific background would have been known to you then. Also, Gemmell has a special way to develop his plot. He sticks to it here once again. If you had read earlier books writteb by him then you would be able to judge this later work better!
