At a certain level of practicing japanese martial arts, in particular Kendo, it is essential to consider the historical, spiritual and theoretical background. Otherwise one will not be able to get most of the concepts high ranking teachers are talking about. And it is facinating also. As I know Bennet to have a great practical background knowledge of Kendo and a few other japanese martial arts, this translation certainly will be more usefull to practitioners than mere literature texts. Thank you, Alex.

Studying about warrior culture during the Tokugawa (Edo) period, Hagakure is a book that defined behavior, etiquette and general rules to the way of life for the Samurai/Bushi (士道 ー shidô). This translation, done by a scholar of all things samurai, is not only an apt translation of the japanese words, but also the meaning behind them for nowadays scholars and interestees. It is an eye opening book for anyone interested in Samurai customs and philosophy!!
