5.0 von 5 Sternen Now it's time for the Hunter to become the hunted!
This was the second computer security book I read and it was like adding flame to a fire because it increased my curiosity and prompted me to want to know more about it, so I ended up reading Cyberpunk by Katie Hafner and John Markoff to get a more inside look. If you start reading it then you'll probably finish it the same day. It talks a scientist that stumbles on...

3.0 von 5 Sternen cuckoo's egg
I am trying to find some answers for the following questions. Before I review I just want to clear up the answers of the following questions. 1) What are the most important events in the book? 2) How does the book end? 3)Who solved the mystery? 4)What interesting things about network security would I find in this book? 5)Beside Cliff Stoll who are the important...

when i started reading this book i couldn't put it down. for the first half it was fast paced, and then it slowed down to a trickle. for the most part stoll provides an accurate portrayal of his attempt at tracking "the hacker", and is consistent in writing style, although unsophisticated. he shines in writing about student life, dealing with fbi, cia, and other organizations, and trying to explain the intricacies of unix in layman terms. he fails in moving the story forward to keep up with the pace he set initially. overall an impressionable first effort.

5.0 von 5 Sternen a very engaging book, 21. Oktober 1999
The author provides a non-fiction story every bit engaging as a Nevil Shute novel. I also appreciated his communication of the idea that networks, computers, their users, and their administrators constitute an ethereal "community". As Stoll suggests, lets not flatter these idiots by referring to them as "hackers" (or even "crackers"): let's call them "scoundrels", "louses", "skunks", "varmints", and "eggsuckers".

I read the German version "Das Kuckucksei" and I recommend it to everybody who is dealing with questions like "Shall I attach our organizations network to the Internet". Unfortunately in Cyberspace there are not only "good guys", so read before in order to avoid headaches afterwards. I read the book on a rainy afternoon, it was more than worth reading it

5.0 von 5 Sternen Terrific Book, 8. Juni 2011

Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I really loved the book. I was surprised - why had I never heard of this book earlier. Anyway, better late than never.

Towards the end (actually the last 30 pages or so) it gets a little slow. I would have given a score of 6stars if those 30 pages were compressed into 20 pages or so.

Do pick this book if

a) You are in for a fast ride
AND
b) You have some basic know-how of computers/networks/unix.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Appropriately named, 1. März 2005
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Cuckoo's Egg (Taschenbuch)
A cuckoo bird will lay its egg in another birds nest letting that bird raise the offspring as her own.
I saw the TV program on this story before reading the book. Coming from a UNIX background it was fun to see a system I recognized. It could have been titled "The story of Ping" oops that title has been taken. I remember being billed for time on the computer and could only gain access at 2 AM. Many of these skills are now lost to people that do not have a shell account. I especially like how they kept the intruder on the line ling enough to track. The hunt was intriguing and it makes you wonder what is happening today. While this book deals with such things as passwords, the many new avenues created on today's Internet may afford for a newer mystery. Until then this is the classic.
A student managing the computer at Berkley notices an unusual charge to his account. He finds that someone is hacking before it was fashionable. To track down the culprit(s) he must first learn the tracking skills. This process is in its infancy so he even has to invent a few of the skills himself. The use of timing and knowledge of the speed of light allows for a good guess at the distance. The only way to go through the old timing switching stations was to hold the intruder on line ling enough. This required the creation of a dummy database with intriguing information.
Who's is this mysterious intruder(s)?
Will they get caught?
What implications does it hold for us today?

Wow this book is really cool. Normally I'm not much of a reader only when i have to but this book I sat down and literally could not put it down. I am a slow reader but I was up for one day and one night and read it completely in one sit. Coming from a lazy 13 year old like myself thats pretty good. I also like the cookie recipe.

Cliff Stoll's account of what happened when he began monitoring the activities of someone who had broken into his computer system is enlightening and entertaining. I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in computer security or online culture.

Please don't make the same mistake I did and pick this book up when I was supposed to be moving apartments. It ended up taking me two extra days. I would tell anyone from a UNIX guru to my parents to read this book... On a slow day.
