An older version of this book was used at my university to teach Java. I liked the old version. The new one has some updated content. This book is helpful for anyone who wants to learn Java, and who is serious about it. The chapters are well presented and it enables you to start programming in Java quite quickly. This book is presented in tutorial style so that you build programs as you read. OO concepts are presented quite well.
After reading this book, you should be able to build some programs on your own. The most important thing is that, you will have a solid base for Java and you'll be able to know where to find information for more complicated problems when needed.
Hope this helps.

I've stumbled across the third edition (Java 1.4) many years ago, so when I received my Kindle this was a natural choice.
If you are a hardcore programmer and software developer interested in the basics and the nifty details of Java programming, this is "the" reference for you. Just be aware that you have to have experience in developing real-life applications; in my opinion this book is not well suited for real beginners in software development, but that's just my personal opinion. For experienced programmers switching to Java (or adding this language to their stack of languages), this is the perfect starting point.
