5.0 von 5 Sternen Grossartig!
Subtil, ironisch und aufwuehlend. Bisher war ich kein grosser Fan von Dean Koontz, aber nach diesem Roman muss ich definitiv weitere Buecher von ihm lesen!

I like Dean Koontz. He is not the best writer out there but a lot of his books are good enough to be entertaining. Not this one though:

Because I do not want to spoil any parts of the story (in case you REALLY want to experience this bore-fest yourself), I will just give you my top reasons why I had trouble to read more than one chapter a day:

I like Dean Koontz. He is not the best writer out there but a lot of his books are good enough to be entertaining. Not this one though:

Because I do not want to spoil any parts of the story (in case you REALLY want to experience this bore-fest yourself), I will just give you my top reasons why I had trouble to read more than one chapter a day:

1) Too much characters. I hate it when a book throws new characters at you in almost every chapter. I hate it even more if these characters are completly pointless (at least most of them). There are A LOT of them. Do not buy this book if you don't like an overabundance of irrelevant persons.

2) Too much description. Koontz delivers precise descriptions of the horrors. So detailed in fact, that it feels sometimes more like a documentary than a novel. It slows the book down a lot and works as a real mood killer.

3) Stupid chharacters. You house is haunted. You know that it's haunted. You just experienced it yourself. You just met a person telling you in-detail what happpend before and that there is a good chance you will get killed if you return. What do you do? A) Return to the house or B) burn it down. If you chose A) there is a slim chance you won't hate most of the characters.

4) Announced killings. Every few chapters there is a chapter in-between, kind of a monolgue, that will tell you which characters are going to die next. Doesn't sound exiciting? Well guess what: It isn't!

The cover says: "Are you brave enough to enter?" But the real question is: "Are you persistent enough to endure?"

1.0 von 5 Sternen His worst book ever...., 17. August 2012
Rezension bezieht sich auf: 77 Shadow Street (Taschenbuch)
I have read just about every book KOONTZ has written and I have nothing bad to say about any of them.....EXCEPT THIS ONE.

The story is simply idiotic, the characters too many and too boring/stereotypical, the descriptions of the building and the slimy monsterblobs are irritating as hell and seem endless. This book gives you the impression that the publisher said: "Dean, just write something and do it fast. The idiots will buy anything from you anyway".

Well, I happened to be one of the idiots and I regret the time I invested in reading this book. Next time, I'll rather watch paint dry....that would certainly be more entertaining than this.

1.0 von 5 Sternen This must be the worst book I've ever read ..., 19. Februar 2012
Rezension bezieht sich auf: 77 Shadow Street: A Novel (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Usually I don't bother with book reviews, but this time I do think it's worth it. I won't get back my time, but maybe someone else will.

This is Koontz, so I wasn't expecting literature, just something entertaining to read while on holiday - some of his earlier work fit the bill perfectly. But the writing is so bad as to be barely functional.
It isn't scary, as whatever one is supposed to fear - basically it's the dark plus bogeymen - is kept so vague and abstract till it's almost over. Could work well enough, if it connected at a subconscious level, but it does not.
The characters are stereotypes with no depth at all. There just had to be something special or unusual about every one of them, though, which makes them seem even more unreal and forced. One just doesn't care for any of them.
It doesn't have a plot to speak of, it's just a bunch of people getting more and more scared of shadows.
The scifi elements the dust jacket seems to hint at, aren't really there, except as a deus ex machina type of element that "explains" the whole mess at the end, Still lots of plot holes and WTF moments.
At around 80% it gets mildly interesting but by that point what plot there is has become so blindingly obvious as to be insulting.
