Abnett is brilliant
am 26. August 2011
Dan Abnett is one of the best authors regarding military scifi with grunt action, meaning the fight of the infantry.
While I know his works in the warhammer scenario by Games Workshop, I was intrigued to see something in another setting and still being mil sci fi.
And I wasnt disappointed:
The story evolves around a journalist and reporter being called by the government to report on the happenings on some backwater planet.
Being there the story keeps picking up space.
At first, it starts slow, with alot of slang words for the reader to digest.
The reader still being in the dark about everything, the story picks up pace about 1/3 to 1/2 of the story, when our protagonist enters the fray and Abnett does what he does best - writing believable soldier action.
So far only David Drake managed to make me smell the gasoline and gun fumes in the air and see the muzzle flashes of guns before me.
There was no point in the story where I lost the SOD (suspension of disbelief), I was gripped.
While some readers may find the ending a bit on the lame side and quite abrupt, I found it refreshing. Back to the roots and no lengthy good bye text and all that.
Granted, the last page could have been two or three pages, the story a bit more cleaned up, but maybe there'll be a sequel?
I'd buy it, without looking twice.
