Clumsy, Brash, and barely enjoyable
am 16. Juli 2014
I'm a big fan of the superhero genre, so I searched online looking for something different. IMDB was the website that I looked at for advice on a series to watch. Unfortunately, they showed MisFits as having 8 stars out of a possible ten. So I gave it a try. After watching the first season, I was tempted to send it back. The script is so clumsy that it leaves major plot holes throughout the film, which makes the story unbelievable, disjointed, and confusing. The acting is mediocre, the dialog seems to be written for an audience that recently began attending primary school. The dialog is so immature that the actors have to rely solely on perverted humor to create some type of relationship or conflict between the characters. Of course these are "misfits", and social outcasts, so I dont expect them to quote shakespeare, but I do think that they deserve to say something more interesting to add to the superhero genre than fart jokes and references to sex every 5 minutes of the film.
I'm actually embarrassed for the screen writer because he or she failed to create intelligent and creative dialog, even between very interesting and troublesome characters. (unless they actually believe that misfits should be unintelligent, impulsive sex machines). However, the redeeming quality of this fim is the fact that it is funny at times. If you are able to handle British dark humor, then this will make you chuckle at times. Thats the only reason this series doesnt get one star.
SEX, SEX, SEX, thats the main point that keeps the plot moving and the misfits together...how brilliant. In the second series, because of inconsistancies and plot wholes, the series stops making any logical sense. Things happen in unrealistic and unbelievable ways. The main character is an anti-social, loud mouth, that has no redeemable qualities. I asked myself why should I like him, why am I watching this? Eventually I movied passed criticizing the film and just tried to enjoy it as much as possible...(its like watching Godzilla destroy buildings for no apparent reason, just pure chaos) If you can bare to watch a film with a poor script, filmed on a tight budget, and mediocre acting, then this series is no problem. I consider it the Monty Python of superhero movies. I still dont know exactly what this film is trying to say or accomplish? The characters aren't well developed, the scenes were shot at a "break neck" pace (fast pace). the special effects were unimaginative and second rate...Did I mention that sex is the main plot device that movies this superhero movie forward, and not the actual events of the storm or their newly acquired superpowers. (ironically one of the Misfit's superpowers is actually some kind of "super sexuality" so go figure...I'm not a saint, but come on, lets be more creative and interesting than to fill every other scene with sex, ESPECIALLY from the main character, who is a skinny, unattractive, anti-social loud mouth who's narccisim borders on sociopathic behavior. One think that I liked about the series is the fact that the Misfits were ugly (except one of them). Its rare that you see ugly faces on televison or the big screen now adays unless they are "misfits" or villians. So this series is one of the first to explore the dynamic of ugly hero/anti-hero types that you start off feeling sorry. Unfortunately for these misfits, due to the plot, you want to see them develop but the story leads them to be even worse than what you expect...sociopaths, murders, sex addicts, and all around unitelligent and unattractive. right when I asked myself what am I supposed to enjoy about this, the main character tells a joke or something that actually works and you remember not to take the film too seriously. However, if you like to see a lot of pointless sex, inconsistant story telling, and poor visual creativity in the superhero genre, this film is for you...sorry for the long post, I wanted to like this series, it had promise, but it let me down.
