Fasinating story, annoyingly written and why no photos?
am 11. Dezember 2009
This is an unbelievable story. At first, I didn't believe it and thought it was fiction. I became even more suspicious when I saw that there isn't a single photo in the book. Why? I thought the whole thing was some kind of hoax so I googled it and found out that it is (more or less) true! For this reason alone, I recommend this book to anyone interested in running or Mexican tribes :-).
But I can't stand the way it's written! I find it dense, difficult to understand, and sometimes just plain silly. Half the time, I have no idea what McDougall is talking about! Here's one of many examples: 'He's so long limbed and lean-muscled, he looks like the endoskeleton of a bulkier beast; melt the Terminator in a cauldron of acid, and Cabello Blanco is what comes out.' Melt the Terminator in acid?! What? McDougall's language can also be enfuriatingly esoteric. What does this mean? ''What freaked me out about you-' Caballo began, but suddenly stopped, bug-eyed (bug what?!) with hunger, as Mama plopped big bowls in front of us and futzed (what?!) over them with chopped cilantro and jalapenos and squirts of lime.' I have no idea what futzed is and I've got a PhD. I guess I could google it, but that would take away the enjoyment of reading, wouldn't it. McDougall also makes up new words for no apparant reason. So, for example, he 'summits' a mountain. There is no such verb - look it up. There's nothing wrong with inventing new language (Shakespeare did it all the time) but McDougall's inventions are often annoying and unnecessary in my view - they just contribute to my general confusion and frustration.
I know style is highly subjective and often a touchy subject, but I've read a lot of books and the style this book is written in annoys the hell out of me! If you can deal with the style (and obviously lots of people can), then you will love this book. As an runner who is injured at the moment, I sooooooo wanted to love this book but the way it is written prevents me from doing that.
