4.0 von 5 Sternen Murder Thriller in Philly's Gayborhood, 28. Juni 2010
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Murder on Camac (Taschenbuch)
If you're looking for good vacation read, Joseph R.G. DeMarco has given us a real meat-and-potato detective story seasoned with the heavy spice of Opus Dei and wrapped in a crust of lavender blossoms. After introducing the story's narrator and main figure, Marco Fontana, a gay private detective and simultaneously owner of a performing troupe of male strippers, the author gets right to the point: the plot's first victim is gunned down without warning on Camac Street, one of those quiet sidestreets in center-city Philadelphia. Details unfold as supporting figures are presented: multi-tasking secretaries and computer-geeks, male-strippers and low-life hustlers, archdiocesan administrators and even the Archbishop of Philadelphia. Hints of connections between the tragic ending of the short pontificate of the "smiling Pope," John Paul I, and the assassination on Camac keep the reader looking for clues to resolve the unknowns. However, author DeMarco never gets distracted from his main story, the murder on Camac. Fontana's breakthrough occurs with his chance introduction to handsome Monsignor Kusek. That, at the latest, is when we can no longer put the book down unread. DeMarco blends many disparate worlds here and is on solid ground with all of them: Catholic Philadelphia, the gay strongholds in the City of Brotherly Love, and the Italian-American experience. He is at his best in scenes at the sleazy but titillating atmosphere of "Stella's" sex-and-booze bar. The reader is not left up in the air at the end. And most of us will want to take the book back home for another read at the end of the vacation and as a tour guide to Philly's gayborhood.
