3.0 von 5 Sternen Good knowledge of nutrition. Bad knowledge of economics.
This is the book that enouraged me to become a vegetarian when I read it in 1991. John Robbins certainly has a good knowledge of health and nutrition. Unfortunately, he does not understand basic principles of economics. For example, Robbins thinks that if farmers in the United States grow extra grain and then feed it to cattle, then that somehow causes people in Africa...

Just buy this book and read chapter 4 entitled "Holy Cow". The rest of the book deals primarily with what a high-fat animal-based diet does to us. As someone stated, "We kill animals and they kill us." This is the very best book on vegetarianism. Both from a health standpoint and from a moral standpoint. What they do to the animals we eat. They just don't kill them. They torture them unmercifully in order to make them more eatable. Sort of like an ANIMAL AUSWITZ. Allow me to state that again. THEY JUST DON'T KILL THE ANIMALS. They snap off chickens beaks, fill cows with dangerous hormones, and make young calves stand in small stalls. All in order to increase profits. Robbins goes into great detail about how an animal diet can be destructive to our health. His graphs are wonderful. Do I eat meat? Yes. I'm sorry. But it's hard. I'll give it up. I have a friend named Min in Canada. She is on a high-protein diet. But she is a real "go-getter", generous, and kind. A high-protein diet has increased her energy level and she is doing wonderful on it. I think that the pivotal point of Robbin's book is the torture involved. At least that can be stopped. Either by "boycotting" or governmental intervention. Thank you.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Compelling, non-judgemental and ESSENTIAL!, 10. Mai 1999
Von Ein Kunde
"Diet For A New America" is obligatory reading for anyone who is remotely concerned with their health and well-being and that of the planet's. Although I was a vegetarian before reading this book, I find myself now leaning more and more towards the vegan diet, thanks to the eye-opening information in Robbins' book.
One of the things that makes this book so outstanding is the very non-judgemental tone Robbins writes in. He simply gives you the facts (lots of them, with 100+ citations per chapter) and allows you to draw your own conclusions. He really does cover just about everything in a thorough and most compelling way. Every reader is sure to find something that will surprise them and change the way they eat.
This is a book that helps to disprove the myth that vegetarians/animal rights activists are fanatical, self-righteous people and instead emphasizes on the love, compassion and respect we should have for all living beings. It's a very quick, engrossing read and you will be happy that you now know a little more about what goes on your dinner plate.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Classic., 9. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
As a long-time physician and nutritionist (I'm 68), I have independently come to many of the powerful conclusions that John Robbins lays out beautifully in his groundbreaking classic, Diet For A New America. Unfortunately, as Robbins demonstrates, powerful forces work very hard to make sure that members of the public are kept ignorant of the danger, inhumanity, and senselessness of a meat-based diet. Furthermore, tradition, a concept in whose name so many injustices are enacted, serves to strengthen the cause of the meat producers.
But this is changing.
As word gets out--through the invaluable work of people like Robbins--that a vegetable-based diet is the ONLY way to achieve true health, meat WILL be phased out of our dietary traditions, and will become a distant, and somewhat shocking, memory.
Read this book. Change accordingly. And thank the gods you have the opportunity to make life better for yourself, your planet, and your fellow creatures.

5.0 von 5 Sternen One of the best reads I've had this year., 2. Oktober 1999
John Robbins was not "preaching to the choir" when I read his book. I have basically always eaten whatever I wanted to. But his background, as a favored son in a privileged position in the dairy industry who woke up and realized that something was amiss, got my attention. He is a mensch; an American hero in my mind. He demonstrates compassion not only for the animals whom he introduces us to in a new way, but even for those in the meat and dairy industry who have undoubtedly had little but venom for him. Robbins' book is not a mere prescription for a change in diet, it is a spiritual treatise on how we live. He helps us to pay better attention to how we live by attending to what we ingest. He shows how our eating is connected to our place on this planet. I suppose that individuals who choose to pigeonhole Robbins as a "liberal" and then disregard the substance of what he says have that choice. I feel we ignore his message at our peril.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Never look at food production the same again!, 3. Dezember 1998
Von Ein Kunde
This book is one not to be missed! It took me three weeks to read it: I will be absorbing it for the rest of my life.
If you are questioning the quality of your food, feeling unbalanced or heavy, this book will explain why. Even if you are not an adamant animal rights activist, there are clearly other reasons eating meat can be bad for you. Robbins backs all his arguments with extensive research. He also shows us that there is not a great big friendly father figure looking out for our food supply!
This is not a book that is going to tell you how to be a good vegetarian, but it will get you started on the path. Robbins dispells many of the arguments against vegetarianism (not enough protien, iron deficiency, etc.) and explains why the closer your food is to its original form, the better off you will be. He also reiterates the need to reevaluate our meat-based system to accomodate the global community that we share.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Every Human Should Read This Book!, 28. Juni 2000
As a vegan I know the tragedy of The Great American Food Machine. Reading this book though was very emotional. It angers me to know that people are unaware of what it takes to make their food, and this book covers it all. If I were to write a book against the animal-based diet it would be exactly like this one; taking apart the American diet and exposing every truth about it. Robbins is compassionate about teaching America about their food and it shows through in his writing. I am going to buy a few more copies of this book and lend them out to my non-vegan friends.

5.0 von 5 Sternen PASS IT ON, 22. Mai 2000
Von Ein Kunde
I try to provide extra eduction for my 14 year old son that the public and private school system doesn't feel is important enough to bother with. Up until now, we have focused on art and music. This summer we will devote to this book and as many more like it as I can find. This summer's education will far outweigh any that he has received thus far. I regret that it took me 40 years to find the information in this book. It is our responsibility to pass this vital information on to our children as soon as possible. Thank you John Robbins.

5.0 von 5 Sternen please, please, please read this book, 19. Juli 2000
Von
David Wakefield (New York, NY) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
(REAL NAME)
This book addresses an issue that no one in America likes to face: where our meat really comes from. It's certainly worse than I ever imagined. I'm one of those people who doesn't even like to recognize that a hamburger is ground-up cow: the idea makes me lose my appetite every time. But this book is one that everyone who eats meat needs to read, even people as squeamish as me. Because by eating meat, we all encourage the current meat production system to continue. We should at least know what it is that we're encouraging. No wonder this book gains so many converts to vegetarianism. Although Robbins' book is filled with strong adjectives and a definite bias in favor of vegetarianism, his book is anything but a piece of propaganda. Filled with footnotes and a very impressive list of sources, he has the facts to back up every seemingly exagerrated statement he makes. He thoroughly covers every side of the meat-eating issue, beginning with explaining how similar/superior(?) animals are to us in their ability to love unconditionally. He then describes the way these sensitive creatures are raised for meat in America, showing beyond any doubt that their lives are hell from the day they are born: death is a blessed end to suffering for these creatures. Robbins then explains the connections between a diet high in meat and dairy and virtually every major disease threatening Americans. He ends by thoroughly explaining how reducing our consumption of animal products can also solve many supposedly unrelated issues facing our nation: deforestation, war, pollution, and energy consumption. Please read this book: you will be surprised by the things you didn't know.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Life-Altering Read, 13. Juli 1999
Sometimes you pick up a book to read for whatever reason...you liked the cover, the content, the subject-matter, or the author. Sometimes you pass up a book for the same reason.
Don't pass this one up. It's an important read for all of us that will enter the 21st century. There are not many books or media devices that ordinarily garner my attention...but after finishing this book, I have many new thoughts and feelings I hadn't considered before. It has touched me deeply and I will be forever changed by it.
If you are a cheese-burger, fried-chicken lovin', veal francias person such as myself, this book will give you much to ponder. I have not had one of my favorite "meals" since reading it..and am still alive and happy to write this review.
Every so often, we need to take a look at the life-style we are living, and how it effects those around us, that is ALL the living creatures around us. I would recommend this book for the vegetarian and meat-lover alike. Some parts are hard to digest( no pun intended), but those are the ideas we need to understand and come to terms with the most.
A must for everyone's 21st century library.

5.0 von 5 Sternen a vegan's defense bible! honest,passionate,intelligent., 2. November 1999
Von Ein Kunde
This book really made sense to me. In Diet for a New America, John Robbins discusses the most important reason why anyone should choose to be a vegan. The reason is life! I have passed it onto so many of my friends and relatives. All of whom pass it back to me with the same basic reaction, "I had no idea". This book is a great representation of how i have always felt and it reaffirms my belief in kindness over killing. Robbins is complete and factual. He doesn't leave out any detail concerning the cruel industry that breeds, exploits and murders millions of innocent victims each year. A simple Happy Meal just won't seem so happy anymore. This man is extremely intelligent and compassionate and it is made evident throughout this book. Someday when I have children and they ask me why I raised them to be vegans I will have them read Diet for a New America. Then they will also realize that there is no other choice.
