Auch wer sich sonst nicht für Sportfilme interessiert: Dieser Film ist etwas ganz Außergewöhnliches. Mit perfekter, innovativer Kameraführung werden die jungen Olympiateilnehmer gezeigt. Eine Ode an die Schönheit des Körpers, meistens allerdings des männlichen. Stellenweise ist die Dramatik etwas überzogen, und bisweilen steht auch das Schönheitsideal der Nationalsozialisten stark im Vordergrund. Das macht den Film aber auch historisch interessant. Was von dem, das eine der nationalsozialistischen Ideologie nicht gerade kritische Regisseurin ästhetisch in Szene setzte, ist für uns auch heute noch ästhetisch, war es auch schon zuvor, ist also eigentlich zeitlos? Das ästhetische Verständnis des Nationalsozialismus ist nur ein Aspekt dieses Films. Wichtiger ist die filmische Inszenierung der Schönheit des Körpers, unabhängig von der politischen Auffassung. Und trotzdem: Der Film ist ein politisches Statement. Und das sollte man bei der Betrachtung des Films kritisch im Hinterkopf behalten.

1936 Olympics brought to life and made immortal. Leni uses every trick in the book and then invents a few to get just the right angle and lighting for each shot and then integrates them into a whole that make you feel that you are there.

By now watching the first film, "Festival of the Nation" spoiled you. Again this film starts out with the ideal and surrounded by Leni's signature clouds. List is leading you to "field hockey, soccer bicycling, equestrian, aquatic and gymnastic events. Highlights are the Pentathlon and the Decathlon." Remember that some countries were still using horses in the military.

It may be unique reasons that brought you to this point such as Leni or photography, or interest in history, or, or, or. But once the action starts you feel that you are there and get lost in the "who will win what and how." Even being aware of the outcome does not prepare you to "not bite your nails" as you watch each athlete barley besting the next until it is over too soon. I noticed that instead of placing medals over the winners, they used laurel wreaths.

Any way you cut it, this movie is worth watching.

Der Titel "Fest der Schönheit" sagt eigentlich schon alles... im Gegensatz zum ersten Teil kommt dieser Film weit weniger "völkisch".
Auf dieser DVD sieht man die reine Ästhetik der einzelnen Sportarten, ohne sich dabei ansehen zu müssen, wie die Nazis damals verehrt wurden (siehe Anfang des ersten Teils oder "Triumph des Willens").
Hat man etwas klassische Musik zuhause, kann man den Film auch sehr gut ohne Ton laufen lassen... kommt fast besser wie mit... den entsprechenden Musikgeschmack vorrausgesetzt.
