In 1998 I visited Germany and Nederland for two weeks. One of my hosts took me to the Schwimbad Musik Club in Heidelberg, and at one point during the night everyone on the dance floor was singing along to these goofy songs that I had never heard before, although they had a familiar 'feel' to them. It turns out the DJ was playing NDW songs and the 'feeling' they conveyed was 1980s new wave music from the US and England.
This CD has almost all of the popular NDW songs and if you want to sample NDW music, this is the one CD you will want. For Americans, even though you will not understand a word of what is being sung, the upbeat melody and kitschy songs are very catchy. Keep an open mind and after a few listens you will find that you will enjoy listening despite not knowing a word of what they are singing.
I don't know which are true 'favorites' in Germany, but I really like Ich Will Spass, Fred Vom Jupiter, Knutsflech (sp?), Codo, Neue Man braucht deise Land, and several others I can't think of right now. And yes, it has 99 Luftballoons.
