barely a musical
am 12. März 2010
"Saturday Night Fever" is one of the worst musicals I have ever seen. Great musicals based on movies can be as diverse as "Legally Blonde" and "The Light in the Piazza", and there are musicals using pre-existing music that can succeed - yes, I'll mention "Mamma Mia" here. But attempting to do both at the same time does not work. In this particular show, the original movie's soundtrack is forced onto the characters so that somewhat atmospheric songs are handled as if they were content numbers. They are not. A few of the songs are pleasant, at least, particularly "First & Last/Tragedy" and the newly-penned "Immortality" - but they still do not make much sense. The singers get by - even though I find Adam Garcia's voice just a tad too soft for his wannabe tough character - but then, maybe that was the idea behind it. Unfortunately, this is not the sort of musical with ideas behind it. So, I'll go with "probably not". And that is also what I would tell people who ask me whether they should buy this CD.
