Back in the days of vinyl, long before the invention of CD, this was the first Christmas album I ever bought. Although I have bought well over a hundred since then, this remains one of my favorites. The reason is simple - the combination of singer and song selection is just right for Christmas.
Although there are some obvious songs here, the most frequently recorded songs have largely been avoided. There are no carols (so no Silent night) while Winter wonderland and White Christmas are also missing. Of course, I love those songs but I have many versions of them on other Christmas albums. Perhaps the most popular songs here are Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer and Rocking around the Christmas tree, both of which suit Lynn ideally. The other standards here are Jingle bell rock, I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus and Frosty the snowman, but they appear on far fewer albums. Again, Lynn has chosen well.
The standards selected are mostly bouncy, cheerful songs and this pattern is followed for most of the album, as exemplified in Spirit of Christmas, Soon it will be Christmas day, Mr Mistletoe and A whistle and a whisker away. Even Don't wish me Merry Christmas, which closes the album, is not as sad as the title suggests.
It is good to see that one of my favorite Christmas albums is once again available on CD.
