Baja Sessions - Chris IsaaK

Just imagine and try to feel the golden sunshine on your skin, the ocean breeze blowing through your hair. A broad beach and a middle tide. Blend over to a warm evening on some market place drenched in strong colors, on the background of black skirts with dark pink roses turning lightly in the soft cooling air.
Old songs slowly sang, adorned with discreet Mexican accords. Only “Waiting for My Lucky Day” (very funny) and “Think of Tomorrow” are new, both nice and very Isaak. I liked the new version of “Dancing”, but it is so very different than the rest, it breaks the list in two. And it is sadly too edgy and not as good as the life performance in the Conan O’Brian Show in 1996. Something that he should really have forgotten to add is “Sweet Leilani”. I didn’t know the song and it has a great story behind. There are many famous and very beautiful versions of this 1934 song, but Mr. Isaak sings it in an extremely cheesy, annoyingly way. I don’t know if his intention was to make a parody of it or not – maybe he just had a good time, and it could be only my own impression anyway.
This CD may be altogether not perfect but it has a warm, relaxing effect. It often sounds as if it wouldn’t be recorded in a studio, the band and the voice of Chris Isaak are very near, playing in the same room with you, with all the mistakes and imperfections of a first take. In a very charming, personal and powerful way.
