Frank Frazetta probably needs no introduction. The images that come to my mind straightaway are the almost perfect anatomy drawings of warriors and women.

This book is a biography of Frank Frazetta looking at the illustrations he created throughout his career. It is really humbling to read how he rose from a kid drawing strange title like "The Elephant who wouldn't help" to the famous series of Conan. There are lots of interesting things to read like his working relationships with editors, his choice of keeping all his prints or how he learned anatomy in a day.

The illustrations included are comics from his childhood, movie posters, book covers and paintings. Towards the end, the paintings are given larger print space each with the story behind the creation.

Fans of Frank Frazetta should probably save a space on your shelf for this book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Without a doubt, a masterpiece, 9. Juni 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Icon: A Retrospective by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art, Frank Frazetta (Gebundene Ausgabe)
If you have read any of the other reviews for this book, then what I am going to say will be old hat. However, Frazetta is the premiere fantasy illustrator/artist of this century and his ability to convey unspeakable emotion and dynamicism with a single brush stroke is unparalleled. This book is a fabulous collection of his work, some pieces never before published, beautifully reproduced and accompanied by very interesting and informative text. This is a must-have reference for any serious artist of the human figure or oil painter, and even if you're not a serious artist it's a great read and an enthralling journey to see the work of such a modern master.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Ein großartiger Künstler, 11. August 2004

5.0 von 5 Sternen What this book means to me as an artist, 8. Juni 2000

(REAL NAME)
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Icon: A Retrospective by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art, Frank Frazetta (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I've admired Frank Frazetta's work for many many years. In this book I really studied his use of color. I'll look at a picture and then start to pick out color combinations - dark colors vs. light colors, warm color vs. cool color, complimentary colors, etc. How did he ever think of using this color with that color? Just a little dab will do it here and there. It's a real education.
The brushwork too is something to behold. The different techniques just on an old fallen tree or in a foot that vanishes into the ground colors. I love his green moss on trees and roots.
I have quite a few favorite artists. Most of them are illustrators. N.C. Wyeth (and only N.C.), Howard Pyle, Norman Rockwell, Alphonse Mucha, J.C. Leyendecker, Hal Foster (Prince Valiant), Walt Kelly (Pogo), Frederic Remington, Maxfield Parrish and a lot of the art that comes out of the Walt Disney Studios. With Mr. Frazetta's work it's everything and more; it's action, color and most important - it's passion. His passion comes through in his art with undeniable strength.
This is a great book showing some of the work of a great artist. You can't go wrong buying this book. As an artist, this book is a condensed course in how it can be done. A picture is worth a thousand words; this book speaks a whole language.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantasy Art that is absolutely stunning!, 14. Oktober 1998
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Icon: A Retrospective by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art, Frank Frazetta (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I am a collector of SiFi-Fantasy art. I will state categorically, Frank Frazetta is the finest Fantasy/SiFi illustrator that has ever lived, bar none! Unlike modern artists, who work with air brush, Frazetta's best work is done in oils. The quality of his oil paintings are on a par with the great masters and deserve to be hung next to the likes Rembrandt van Rijn. His compositions are always emotionally stimulating, intriguing, and beautiful. Frazetta has the unique talent to tell a fantastic story with a paint brush. This wonderful book has reproduced some of Frazetta's finest work with meticulous care. The color plates are crisp and vibrant. They will captivate your imagination with their incredible beauty. This is one of those Frazetta collections that will soar in value once it is out of print. Take my advice. Buy it now!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Simply the Best Frazetta book ever done!, 14. September 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Icon: A Retrospective by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art, Frank Frazetta (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Certainly one of the 20th century's most influential artists, Frank Frazetta has finally been given the showcase his work deserves. Featuring virtually all of the paintings that made him a legend among artists and fans alike (Conan, Tarzan, et al), "Icon" also includes a stack of previously unpublished and uncollected art, photographs, and some fascinating commentary by Fenner and Frazetta himself. From drawing comics for EC to ghosting "Lil Abner" for Al Capp to painting movie posters for Clint Eastwood, Frank Frazetta has proven again and again that he is one of the most exciting creators in the history of fantasy art. Often imitated, never equaled, Frazetta is the best and "Icon" is a *must have* book!

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Icon: A Retrospective by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art, Frank Frazetta (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Ever since I was a little child, my father had some of the earlier work's of this master of fantasy art, along with some Vallejo's and Hogarth's, and I must say, although not my favorite artist, Frazetta's work has been and will be, a great influence for dozens of current artists and a definitive corner stone in the art of this and the next hundred years. It seems that even today, some people like pandora14 still think Michaelangelo's David is some kind of pornographic work that should be buried to ashes...mmm...pity for them, they don't know what they're missing!

5.0 von 5 Sternen The best of all Frazetta collections, 7. Oktober 1998
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Icon: A Retrospective by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art, Frank Frazetta (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I used to be a collector of books about Frank Frazetta, but my hobby eventually died due to the cost of out-of-print editions and the scarcity of new material. Ballantine's "Fantastic Art" series has been out of print for quite a while, and it's very difficult to find used copies that are in decent shape. Thank goodness "Icon" was released. It allows fans to experience an excellent sampling of his works, and it contains interesting annotations and historical info. It's also very affordably priced. God bless you, Frank!
