5.0 von 5 Sternen A witty book which fascinates a most demanding reader
One wouldn't say Kurt Vonnegut is an easy writer. Yet witty, sarcastic, endearing and painfully truthful in all which deals with human nature and contemporary society - with his seriousness hidden behind the bravade of the sci-fi facade.
Out of his many creations "the Sirens" is especially remarkable. The plot is vivid, there are several different story...

3.0 von 5 Sternen The Sirens of Titan
An interesting work of Vonnegut. His style is excellent as usual and the plot ok. It is a lot of science fiction, hidden meanings, irony and sarcasm. I have to admit that I did not get all of it, but the novel is excellent for further discussions.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Fun Book, 18. März 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Sirens of Titan: A Novel (Taschenbuch)
Vonnegut is amazing. He wrote a novel about such a serious subjects as religion and the purpose of all humanity and makes it so every page is more fun, more enjoyable, and more intreguing then the last. The language and style of the book was so Vonnegutishly colorful and his imagery so wild, imaginative and vivid, I felt at many points throughout the book that I was actually reading a comic book, only the cartoons were created entirely with words. It was a terrific book, packed with surprizes. I thought, however, that the references to flying saucers and Martians gave the book a little of a dated flavor, but it didn't harm the book at all. A good book for teenagers who like to read or for adults who have a sense or humor and/or an imagination.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Lyrical and haunting. A triumph of the human spirit., 7. Februar 2000

What a beautiful book! I almost cried when Salo disembodied himself to prove his love and loyalty to Skip. Before reading this book, I thought myself a reductionist. It turned me around. Everyone should read this masterpiece. To paraphrase the author, "I guess somebody up there likes me."

5.0 von 5 Sternen An entertaining look at the purpose of humanity, 22. Dezember 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Sirens of Titan: A Novel (Taschenbuch)
The blurb on the back cover of the Sirens of Titans advertises "a prophetic vision about the purpose of human life that only Vonnegut has the courage to tell." Perhaps I missed the boat, but I didn't find Vonnegut's message so unique. That said, Vonnegut spins an entertaining, humorous tale that seems to ridicule anyone who takes humanity too seriously.

5.0 von 5 Sternen among vonnegut's best, 18. Dezember 1999

the sirens of titan is perhaps the best book written by vonnegut, or by any other human being in the history of this world. his message is at once deep and hilarious and unsettling. he presents you with a lighning bolt that shocks you into consciousness. he moves you to tears and leaves you wondering, what's gonna happen next? my favorite book of all time, as you must have guessed, along with slaughterhouse five. vonnegut should have been the president of the united states. his vision is unique.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A cosmic masterpiece, 28. September 1998
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Sirens of Titan: A Novel (Taschenbuch)
I loved it...you'll see me write a review for every Vonnegut novel I read. This one looks at fate and relegion in such a unique way, and I spent months talking and discussing the end. I think this is the first from Vonnegut, and definitley a good read. After this I suggest going to Breakfast of Champions, SlaughterHouse-five, and Timequake.

Skip slaughterhouse-five and Breakfast of Champions. This, in my opinion, is Vonnegut's greatest.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Out on a limb, I guess..., 20. Oktober 1998
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Sirens of Titan: A Novel (Taschenbuch)
The heavy burden is mine, this is so far a 5/5 and I'm going to trash this puppy. I wanted to just give a quick review, but now I see that I'll have to justify my existance first. OK, here goes.
First, I have just reviewed over 10 books, and this was easily the worst. All of the books were also considered classics in one genre or another. Second, I read many books and tend to quite optimistically find at least something of value in every one of them.
This book bored me near death. It's pedantic sarcasm insulted my intelligence in a manner that is usually restricted to the most annoying yet socially successful dinner guests. Imagine if you will that the charmingly witty, earthy characters from Irving's A Prayer For Owen Meany were overrun by a pack of ugly rabid dogs in the first chapter, and then you had to listen to *why* rabid dogs were rabid dogs, and *why* it's bad to be bitten, ad nauseum. And then watch the characters run around independently, biting other random characters...
Let's face it: Kurt Vonnegut is occasionally gut wrenchingly funny. So's Irving. Hell, so's Douglas Adams, and not everyone likes his slapstick. Kurt Vonnegut has an amazing grasp of the English language, especially in narrative description. So do many writers (Mann comes to mind). And occasionally you discover a fantastically rich vein of creative thought (his depiction of the Harmoniums comes to mind). But is this book really funny? A joy to read? Inspiring? Intellectually stimulating? Good commentary? Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.
You will laugh occasionally. However, your hit ratio will be worse than your average Saturday Night Live (apologies to non-Western surfers). You will occasionally stop to think, "Boy, that was a turn of phrase that I don't think many writers could pull off." But that's about it.
In fact, many of the same themes run through so many of Vonnegut's books that you get the sneaky feeling you've been there before. And I got the sneaky feeling early into this book that no matter what the author was eventually going to half-heartedly pontificate, I was going to yawn off as too little, too late.
If you read this one, put a little extra salt and butter on your popcorn, kick up your feet, and expect to move on quickly to your next task, exactly 326 pages later.

I have never read such a boring and stupid book. It was really a waste of time. If this is one of the best of Vonnegut's books, then I don't want to know how "good" the others are.
