A very useful, practical and accurate guide, 29. August 2002
I first came across Richard Lord's book when planning a move to Germany in the late 1990's. While I knew very little of what lay ahead, I was intrigued and encouraged by what Mr Lord wrote. Once I began establishing myself in Germany it became clear to me how practical, insightful, and even-handed Mr Lord's understanding of the Germans and Germany really is. I still refer to his book often, and I've been in Germany almost four years now. Highly recommended for anyone planning an expatriate experience, or thinking about visiting Germany for longer than two weeks.

Interessanter Perspektivenwechsel, 27. Februar 2003
Es ist sehr interessant, als Deutscher einmal Deutschland und die Deutschen aus Sicht eines Amerikaners zu sehen. Das ist sehr hilfreich, wenn man mit Ausländern zu tun hat, relativiert so manche als "normal" angesehene Verhaltensweise und ist zudem auch noch unterhaltsamer Lesestoff.
Einziger Wermutstropfen: die Sicht des Autors ist durchaus auch ein wenig einseitig. ER hat natürlich die amerikanische Brille auf (was nicht zu vermeiden ist - ihm aber nicht wirklich bewußt zu sein scheint) und seine Kontakte in Deutschland würde ich auch nicht als repräsentativ einschätzen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt wohl schon auf dem "Bildungsbürgertum".
Nichtedestoweniger ein empfehlenswertes Buch!

This book is a must not only for poeple moving into Germany but also for Germans who want to stay elsewhere. You might understand why some things which look different in other place are not really strange. We Germans are sometimes strange!

I think "Culture Shock!: Germany" is as excellent as a book about German culture could possibly be. ... The only flaw I found in there was the list of "Germany's 16 Federal states": It named only 15 - Germany's largest state North Rhine-Westphalia was left out.

A great book to get to know the German character!, 15. Februar 2001

This book was great for my husband who still had to get to know the German character and attitudes. But not only that. Even more it was good also for me, as I am now living abroad and have to realize how unacceptable my (normal German) behaviour can be for other cultures. This book great for everyone who wants to understand those complicate Germans, and for the Germans to realize that not all the other cultures think like we do... :o)

Perspective from non-Caucasian female, 10. Dezember 1999

I find "Culture Shock! Germany" a very helpful book. Although the information on the punctuality of trains is a bit out-dated. It would be nice if a small section from the non-Caucasian women's perspective is included in the next edition. I did had the shock of my life, and am now reeling from these encounters.
