As Original As It Gets
am 30. September 2003
The Sherlock Holmes stories were originally published by the Strand Magazine. Wordsworth collects facsimiles (copies) of all the stories in this single book. The advantage of this approach is the originality. You get the original text, original sketches, original illustrations, and even some original advertisements from the magazine.
The major drawback is the limited quality of the archived material. There are strong variations in the brightness of the pages, ragged or smeared characters, irregular character spacing, and so on. With the book's format of 15 by 23 cm with a two column layout, the regular text is acceptable in size. But the occasional smaller font becomes very small indeed.
Wordsworth also released the facsimiles in a three volume edition in pocket book size (12,5 by 19,5 cm), where even the regular text is a challenge for the eyes. This complete collection with it's larger size is definitely an improvement over that. But if your eyes are not the best, you'll probably prefer an edition where the original text has been typeset from scratch with a larger font in a single column.
