4.0 von 5 Sternen good info, but i would have liked more!
as an aspiring web page designer (who always believed she had a "good eye" but often needs hours of trial and error to find that acceptable look), i was looking for a practical, beginners' introduction to graphic design. i am not interested in the theory or schools of thought or even terms so much as practical, usable info that i can put to work right...

1.0 von 5 Sternen Ugly
I may have too critical a background (been interested in typographic design for a few years), but one thing immediately struck me when I held this book in my hands: it's plain old ugly, sorry. The pages are full of obtrusive big and bold letters shouting all over the place (the chapter numbers measure no less than 5 cm), and the fancy font used for picture captions...

5.0 von 5 Sternen Desktop Publisher's Must-have Book, 29. Juni 1998

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Non-Designer's Design Book: Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice (Taschenbuch)
As a professional graphic designer at a community college in Maryland, I deal with VIPs (Visually Illiterate Person) every day. Whenever a non-designer co-worker asks for advice on a DTP project, I recommend this book. If they are in my office, I pull out my copy and SHOW them how good it is. This small, easy-to-read book communicates basic design principles clearly without using fancy jargon. The ample "before and after" examples speak volumes-- with a glance, the reader can see the difference between uninformed design and design with the basic principles used. Anyone who uses a computer for Desktop Publishing should be required to own this book! P.S. All of Robin's books are this good!

This book will get you to "think visually" whenever you look at a printed page. More than to just recognize the good, bad and plain 'ol ugly, you'll learn techinques to make any document you produce compelling and a joy to read.

My day job includes producing proposals of anywhere from 6 to 100 pages, and since I first read this book about a year ago, I've been getting raves from clients that they always want to pick my stuff up first from the piles they recieve.

Another plus is that all of Robin William's books are clearly, concisely and compactly composed. They are a joy to read, especially after slogging so many 300-500 page desktop design books.

I help organizations establish their own multimedia teams and have been wondering for some time how to teach "ordinary computer users" (with no creative background) to create professional looking multimedia projects.
Well, although this book was meant for the print media, I still found it outstanding as a tool to teach non-creative background multimedia designers basic design concepts that really make their projects look more proefessional.
So, if you are developing multimedia/web-site projects, THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR YOU TOO!
Keep up the good work!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A wonderfully concise, and practical guide to basic design, 15. Januar 1999

This basic guide to design principles is not only clearly written, it "walks the walk" as well as "talks the talk". That is, the basic principles are demonstrated clearly by the book's many "before and after" graphic examples. It is non-technical and easy to understand. It focuses on a few core ideas that will help anybody improve his or her ability to design attractive printed material. There is some overlap between this and the author's book on web design (The Nondesigners' Web Book), but I found both worthwhile.

This, and other Robin Williams books will not only change the way you create printed documents, it will change the way you evaluate a printed page. In a clear, concise, and informative style, you'll learn the principles of good design.

Another distinguishing plus is that this book is a joy to read. The majority of desktop publishing books are written by designers who need training in writing; this is certainly not the case here.

A must-have, along with "The Mac/PC Is Not A Typewriter" and her other books.

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Non-Designer's Design Book: Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice (Taschenbuch)
After plodding through many snobbish and boring books on graphic design, I stumbled onto this little gem at a computer show a few years ago. I have treasured it ever since. It is simply the most clear and concise primer on graphic design ever written. Robin Williams' writing style is witty and fun, yet incredibly informative. Her design principles are priceless. They are easy to understand and apply. And, they are easy to remember, due to their "unfortunate acronym." How about a new and expanded version, Robin?

For twenty years I've been looking for a typographic design book for the literate. This is an extraordinary, useful book. It's easy to successfully apply all of the suggestions and directions, and it's written in a style that makes me feel like Williams is talking just to me. There is a clear, casual ease with every phrase and every illustration that I've never before seen in a "how to" book. Buy this if you ever want to design books, magazine articles or even web pages, and you can't go wrong!

5.0 von 5 Sternen This may be the single most useful book I own., 6. August 1998
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Non-Designer's Design Book: Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice (Taschenbuch)
This book contains clear examples of fundamental design principles that everyone who has ever put pen to paper (or mouse to mousepad) should know. In an entertaining and accessible style, the author patiently explains the tenets of graphic design that are so often a mystery to desktop publishers--when we se a printed page, we know what we like, but not why. After reading this book, you will know why, and that will give you the power to create engaging, appealing printed documents.

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Non-Designer's Design Book: Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice (Taschenbuch)
Although,I'm not a graphics designer, I needed to gain some insight into that field in order to create professional, sophisticated, pleasant, and pleasing web pages for myself and my company. A poor presentation is worse than no presentation at all. This little book solved the problem with humor and understanding. The examples are clear, the writing concise, and the lessons easily learned. Many thanks to Robin Williams who is obviously a wonderful teacher.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Read this book before you publish anything!, 10. März 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Non-Designer's Design Book: Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice (Taschenbuch)
If you pick up this book looking for that on-the-edge-physical comedy that made Robin Williams one of the worlds most famous comedians, boy have you got the wrong Robin Williams! This author is one of the leading authorities on visual design and presents her information in a clear, concise, no-nonsense (well almost)kind of way. Her book is a valuable resource even for people who think they are familiar with aspects of design or have been told that they, "have a good eye," so don't be dissuaded by the title. As an experienced journalist, the book brought back a lot of my earlier newspaper layout training. It put into plain language the principles for which I had no name other than, "that just doesn't look right." The principles of proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast are highlighted and expounded upon in each section. I found the section on typography to be extremely interesting and I find myself looking for examples of contrasting type all around me now.
Visual examples of weak design and what can be done to make the design better are on nearly every page, and make the subject matter very clear. The author maintains that most beginning mistakes in design are tied to mistakes in Contrast Repetition, Alignment, or Proximity (C.R.A.P). That sounds about right. If you are going to publish any document (print or electronic) this should be the first book you read before you do.
