Whether or not What to Expect When You're Expecting is a good book depends entirely on what kind of person you are. 1.0 von 5 Sternen I do not recommend this book!
I did not like the way the book seemed focus on problems that can occur - for example, there was a brief discussion about a problem that occurs in 2% of pregnancies. Well, if there is a 98% chance that it won't happen to me, I don't want to start worrying about it now! Also, I have always had a relatively healthy diet but when I read the following quote I had to laugh...

Whether or not What to Expect When You're Expecting is a good book depends entirely on what kind of person you are. If you feel much more comfortable if you know everything, including all the bad possibilities, What to Expect will answer all of your questions in great detail, including stuff that your doctor simply doesn't have time to tell you no matter how helpful he/she is. If, on the other hand, you are the kind of person who freaks out when somebody suggests a negative possibility and stresses about anything and everything, What to Expect would be a terrible book for you. I am one of the former type, and I absolutely loved the book, especially since I had a doctor who was inclined to tell me "everything's fine, don't worry about it". It became progressively clearer throughout my pregnancy that if anything was wrong, he wouldn't tell me, for fear of my stressing about it. By not telling me, I stressed more for wondering what he might not be telling me! When he told me I had toxemia, I would have dismissed it and not done anything about it since he said it so vaguely. But when I read about what it was in What to Expect, I realized I had better take it a bit more seriously, and so I arranged to take one day off work a week and made a conscious effort to rest more. I think this was what prevented the toxemia from getting any worse. So do an honest evaluation of yourself before you buy this book and good luck with your pregnancy and your baby!

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Great Resource Book for First-Timers, 25. Januar 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: What to Expect When You're Expecting (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Unlike so many of the other readers offering reviews of "WTEWYE," I actually found the book VERY helpful. Maybe, if you've had previous pregnancies and births (as the majority of the negative reviewers had), this book may seem too simplistic or condescending but, having never been pregnant and with no family nearby, I found it incredibly helpful for the very reason that it doesn't assume that the reader knows all the little details about pregnancy. For me, the authors answered many of those "stupid" questions I was too embarassed to ask even my girlfriends because I thought everyone knew the answer but me, and I didn't want to seem naive.
I liked the easy question-and-answer format and simply skipped over questions I wasn't interested in at the time or to which I already knew the answer. Personally, when doctors and nurses all too often don't take the time to thoroughly explain medical issues to their patients, I really appreciated the fact that this book covered even the most commonplace issues that first-timers like myself didn't know and often didn't think to ask during a doctor visit.
I may not refer to it as much during my second pregnancy, but I found "WTEWYE" invaluable during my first!

Well, if there is a 98% chance that it won't happen to me, I don't want to start worrying about it now! Also, I have always had a relatively healthy diet but when I read the following quote I had to laugh - "Before you close your mouth on a forkful of food, consider: 'Is this the best bite I can give my baby?' If it will benefit your baby, chew away. If it'll only benefit your sweet tooth or appease your appetite, put your fork down.'" Talk about pressure! If you stress yourself about about every forkful of food, I believe that the stress is probably worse on the baby than if you had allowed yourself to have that handful of M&M's! I enjoyed the 'Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy' by Vicki Iovine much more, and supplemented it with informative web-sites, my Doctor, and childbirth classes.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Exhaustive and informative but not very inspiring., 7. Mai 1999

This was yet another of the many books I read in pregnancy but I am an obstetric anaesthetist so have a good knowledge of problems in pregnancy already. I am surprised that this book has provoked such vitriolic reviews although I too prefered Sheila Kitzinger. I thought that this was actually a reassuring book for people who do get complications in pregnancy and the chapters relating to such complications were sensible. I am afraid I have little sympathy for people who object to the eating dogma (everything on your fork...!!!) cos believe me, if you are like me and put on too much weight only a few pounds of which disappears at birth then you too will wish you had considered each forkful a bit more carefully!!
Overall I think people would be well advised to combine this with a more "naturally" orientated book but that if used in combination with other sources it may well be useful.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A good introductory book on pregnancy., 4. August 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: What to Expect When You're Expecting (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Being pregnant for the first time, I've found the revised edition of WHAT TO EXPECT... to be a good basic book on pregnancy. I didn't feel that the book emphasized the negatives (perhaps it was different in the first edition?), nor do I feel that they condemn moms who just have to have that chocolate bar or pint of Ben & Jerry's (heck, they recommend cheating on your diet once a week!). My main gripe with the book is that the exercise section is a bit confusing; they name exercises but don't do a good job of showing how they're done. It's also sometimes not clear, when they talk about a certain number of weeks into the pregnancy, whether they mean weeks since conception or weeks since last menstrual period. Overall, though, I've found it to be a good introduction to pregnancy. It shouldn't be your only book, but no book should be your only book.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A good book, but has some problems..., 17. Juni 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: What to Expect When You're Expecting (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I consulted this book from the moment I found out I was pregnant, and it has some very good information, but it can be very scary also. It gives the impression that unless the things you are going through are exactly as they are in the book, then there is something wrong. For example, it's states that Braxton-Hicks contractions are "painless", but they can actually be painful, as I later found out. It also makes you feel that if you ever eat a teaspoon of sugar, or anything not quite healthy, that you are somehow damaging your baby and even yourself. It is basically a good book, but you need to read it with an open mind, because no one has a "textbook" pregnancy and can go nine months without eating a piece of chocolate cake!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Useful as Reference, Harmful as Guide, 12. Januar 2000
Von
Rezension bezieht sich auf: What to Expect When You're Expecting (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Yes, everyone should have this book, if only as a detailed reference resource for everything that could conceivably go wrong with a pregnancy. However, the tone is condescending, the "facts" are tempered with neither reason nor perspective, and the overall attitude seems to be: 'If something goes wrong, it's ALL YOUR FAULT' (e.g. the "best odds" diet).
By all means, use this book. But unless you feel the need to take orders, or have the confidence to read without immediate self-doubt, do yourself a favor and get a book that will support you as a prospective parent and human being (e.g. The Hip Mama's Guide, or Dr. Sears' book).

3.0 von 5 Sternen a flawed basic reference book, 16. Juli 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: What to Expect When You're Expecting (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I found "What to Expect" to be a crucial but irritating part of my pregnancy library. Basically, most of the book was superb in its detail, but the nutrition section was offensive -- pregnant women don't need the dose of self righteous guilt that it provides (if you must have a treat, maybe a piece of carrot cake once a month?!!!!?). Buy it, but only if you also buy Vicki Iovine's "Girlfriends Guide" for humor and practical advice. I also really liked "Advice from a pregnant obstetrician" (title approximate) for more reasonable and usable advice from a practicing OB/GYN (much less of a guilt trip than What to Expect).

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great Book!, 24. Juni 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: What to Expect When You're Expecting (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Unlike many of the others who have commented, I did not get the feeling of 'having' to conform to the authors suggestions verbatim, particularly regarding diet. They were good informative suggestions, but left as that. I never felt forced to eat 'wheat germ', nor did I feel scared if my pregnancy was not up to par with the authors phases and suggestions. All in all I found that most of my questions were completely answered in this book with it's question/answer format. This is a great reference book and deals sensitively with the emotional process a pregnant woman goes through as well. I recommend this book, particularly for first time mothers.
