This is a great book for some one who needs the basics on gardening. I found the first 126 pages full of good info on setting up a greenhouse, but got to mention over 25 picture from a greenhouse supply catalog that I all ready got free.. the next 50 pages on propagation didn't have any thing on air layering or some other fun ways of growing plants. Its (air layering) the best way to start many plants. The next 125 pages is used to describe lots of flowers and vegetables, already in most good gardening books. The section on insects is very good and is worth the cost of this book. But the biggest problem I have with this otherwise well wrote book, is the negetive comments about hydroponics. The author does not seem to know of the latest fun growing methods that most greenhouse growers would like to dabble in. There are organic hydroponic fertilizers or you can make them. Growing hydroponic vegges does not have to be done the expensive set ups that some commercial growers use. Most large growers are using a very simple method that anyone can use. The directory had no surprises, alittle small. Do get this book if you no very little about gardening. A great first gardening book.

I found Shane Smith's book very, very helpful. I have just started gardening in my greenhouse and use his book as my greenhouse gardening bible. It is an excellent guide to all aspects of greenhouse gardening. I've followed his methods for seed starting, polinating and propagating as well as watering, moisture control, soil mixes and more. I started tomatoes by seed in October and now in January have tons (well, almmost) of green fruit on leafy, luxurious plants. And I live in northern Idaho!
Shane does repeat himself many times for which I am thankful. I need repetition in order to remember a little of what I am reading/studying. How else would one remember tomato mosaic disease suffered by tomatoes and pepper at the hands of smokers or that by overwatering you can suffocate your plant's roots and kill them. Did you know that plants benefit from carbon dioxide; a substance lacking in the greenhouse? Thank you for repetition, Shane!
This is a must-have guide for greenhouse/cold frame, sunroom gardeners. Oh yes, don't forget to peak at his photo in the back. You'll get a sense for the man's character!

Why do authors repeat info page after page? half the book is not worth reading if you aren't growing all the hundreds of plants it list, each page has a seperate page with mostly the same info as the page before over and over and over. Its find if you read one and skip the rest that you could care less about, but then there is only 200 pages of not very exciting info. But the big deal is that I found these processes out of date and could not get Any of the phone numbers it list. Does the author think that the greenhouse industry has been sleeping for 10 years? I think he forgot that thousands of new products and designs that take the worry out of this fun hobby. But after all this I would buy this and all books on greenhouse because one idea is worth the money!

My problem with this well written book is that it is OLD, the proccesses decribe about greenhouses and pictures has to be 20 years old The greenhouse industry has made so many big new changes lately that old ways are not the best. It is not a good source for serious growers and that the greenhouse info is good only if you plan to use it on a old greenhouse.Half the book has info on growing plants that you can find simular info in hundreds of good gardening books. This book has too many old addresses and phone numbers and I could not find any most of these. Try a new edition of what ever greenhouse book you buy to really be successful and have more fun with this great hobby!

This book is so well-organized that even though its absolutely packed with information on so many aspects of greenhouse growing, its easy to find what you need at any given time. Initially it was so helpful to me in getting started and now it is my best reference book. I particularly loved the design, pollinating and propagating sections, and the advice for individual flowers, vegetables and herbs. The information about plants that like it cool/warm or shady/sunny helps me decide on seeding dates and locations. There are plenty of practical tips, lists, appendices, charts and inserts.

I built a greenhouse last summer. Without this book I would still be struggling to get things right. Whenever I was confused or frustrated, this book was there to help out. If you are considering a greenhouse, GET THIS BOOK. If you already own a greenhouse, GET THIS BOOK. Everything you could want to know is covered. It is amusing and written in plain old garden speak. You will recognise in the author, a fellow gardener with dirty fingernails, just like yours!!!

The juicest Greenhouse book in print. This book is so easy to read yet plum full of useful information. This book is a must for the seedling gardeners as well as the master gardener. I loved the illustrations and pictures. The author makes you feel like someone you know, working to make you grow the garden of your dreams!

This is the best book on the topic I have come across. Yes, the author is not keen on hydroponics but if that is what you want there are other great books on that subject. I loved the chatty, down home style that makes each topic easy to understand.
