3.0 von 5 Sternen Nice but somehow it doesn't fit with the rest of the Honor Harrington Series.
I've come to love the Honor Harrington series. And despite some booring parts in the later books I'm always looking forward to find something new in the Honorverse.
That's why I couldn't wait until this book was available in paperback.

A Beutiful Friendship was my first (well, second after "By The Book") venture into the Honorverse (following the chronological order of stories as suggested by venerable Wikipedia at [...]) and I wasn't disappointed. While I realize that some readers may find the yarn spun in this novella about Honor Harrington's first encounter with the sentient species of her homeworld, Sphinx, and her subsequent ascent to her first kind of official enlistment in public service somewhat mushy, I found it tremendously captivating to read even if the author strummed those emotional strings rather heftily here and there - and I fell for it fully, big sentimental oaf that I am. :) It's probably not a very _adult_ book, coming to think about it, but one I shall enjoy tremendously to read to my own kids one day, to ignite the love for faraway worlds and alien species in them. For that, it has my glowing recommendation. If there is still an adressable kid in you, susceptible for wonderment and awe, treat that child in you to this entry into the world of Honor Harrington, when she was still known as ornery young Stephanie and about to embark on her first of many adventures.

I've come to love the Honor Harrington series. And despite some booring parts in the later books I'm always looking forward to find something new in the Honorverse.
That's why I couldn't wait until this book was available in paperback.
The story is fast paced. You can follow Honor on her path through that certain part of her youth. And you'll get a unique insight into treecat society.
All the stuff I like about the stories from David Weber combined with his good writing.

BUT

Honor acts like somebody at least 2 years senior her given age. Most adolescents don't act that way until they are 4 years older than she is. - Well maybe she is really mature for her age?

What really annoyed me was that I didn't even get it that this Harrington is not Honor in a young age. The character traits are the same. And what you get then are indiscrepancies between this book and other books from the Honorverse. This is even more
Espacially Mission of Honor: Honor Harrington, Book 12 . Both books are released within the same year. But the background stories don't match. Names change. The Harrington's history is rewitten. What helped me bridge the gap was Changer of Worlds (Worlds of Honor)
But if you just read both books one after the other you get into real trouble trying to fit them together.

If you don't mind having to ignore some real strange changes (or don't know the Honorverse) this is a good read for everyone who likes the faster books from David Weber.
If you are really familiar with the Honorverse you'll find a good introduction into the beginning of the interaction between treecats and humans.
