4.0 von 5 Sternen New Depths of Character Amid a Transparent Plot
I love novels that do character development well. In the typical English murder mystery, the victim is usually a bloodless body which quickly disappears from the story after dying. A department store dummy would serve as well.

The only reason why I rated this book above average was due to George's attempt to update Sayer's masterpiece, Gaudy Night. Like "Gaudy," this book is set in an English university town, examines the rarefied academic atmosphere, and has the subplot of what marriage does to women. Unfortunately, Lady Helen is not Harriet, and Lynley is most definitely not Lord Peter. All the same, she should get credit for trying and, like all of her other books, this story is a fun way to spend a rainy day.

I love novels that do character development well. In the typical English murder mystery, the victim is usually a bloodless body which quickly disappears from the story after dying. A department store dummy would serve as well.

The beauty of For The Sake of Elena is that Ms. George does a thorough and fascinating job of describing the victim. Elena is an unusual character as well in that she lives somewhere between the hearing and the deaf world, finding solace in neither one. As a spirited woman with strong opinions, she finds herself able to twist the people and events around her into new directions.

In the background, Lynley uses Elena's death as a reason to pursue Lady Helen to Cambridge where she has gone to avoid him. His haunted pursuit of Lady Helen will ring strongly with those who love romantic novels. Barbara Havers also finds herself torn between pillar and post in trying to care for her aging mother while maintaining her career. Lynley and Havers soldier on through this complication in a way that will remind you of an old married couple dealing with adversity. It's solid stuff!

The book's major disappointment is the murder mystery. It's painfully transparent, and the red herrings are too obviously red to be any good.

Had Ms. George planned to write a romantic novel instead, this book would probably have worked much better as she magnificently displays all of the positive and negative aspects of attraction and romance for your full consideration.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Cant' get enough of E.G., 15. September 2003
Rezension bezieht sich auf: For the Sake of Elena (Roman) (Taschenbuch)
This was my first Elizabeth George book, too, and although I am not a native speaker I found it very easy to read and follow the plot which has been arranged most intriguingly by the author. It is a real page-turner and will surely keep you from sleeping for at least some nights. Highly recommendable!

3.0 von 5 Sternen I didn't like it that much, 18. Februar 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: For the Sake of Elena (Roman) (Taschenbuch)
I found it all too melancholic. Every single character was feeling so guilty for one reason or another they made the general atmosphere a bit too heavy / gloomy. Being a quite inexperienced book reviewer, my comments would then base on the instinctive 'after taste' once I've turned over the last page. This was my first Elizabeth George book which didn't exactly make me want to rush out and find another one of hers. I didn't find the motive for the brutal murder strong enough to justify it. Finding out 'who dunn it?' at the end didn't urge me to think "Oh I see., Of course it was him/her!, I could have guessed that, etc." (I'm trying hard not to give away and spoil it all for those who have not read it yet.) I think murder novel readers like it more when motives are really convincing / deserving.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Düster..., 28. Oktober 2005
Rezension bezieht sich auf: For the Sake of Elena (Roman) (Taschenbuch)

3.0 von 5 Sternen Obviously an early George and not as strong as the others., 9. April 1999

While this story doesn't stack up to George's later books, her characters are well developed and believable. Readers like me who are enchanted with Havers (particularly) and Lynley will enjoy getting to know them in this book. The real story behind Lynley and Lady Helen's long-standing engagement. Anyone dealing with elderly parents will understand Haver's dilemma with her mother. George's characters always seem to be real people with real problems. I'd advise starting with her later books -- "Deception on His Mind" is a good place to start -- then work backwards.

5.0 von 5 Sternen For The Sake Of Elena Is Elizabeth George's Master Work, 21. Oktober 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: For the Sake of Elena (Hörkassette)
This is the third Elizabeth George novel I have purchased from amazon.com, read by Derek Jacobi, and I consider it to be the author's master work! True, it is just as well written as her other books, but what sets this apart is the fact that Jacobi brings alive the beautiful sensitivity of the story through his reading Elena Weaver's few lines toward the end, the sound of his tear-filled voice also bringing the listener to tears of their own! This is definitely a must-have for anyone who is both an Elizabeth George fan, as well as a fan of this versatile British actor.

4.0 von 5 Sternen My first Elizabeth George book, 27. November 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: For the Sake of Elena (Roman) (Taschenbuch)
FOR THE SAKE OF ELENA is my introduction to Elizabeth George and her detectives Lynley and Havers. I enjoyed the twists in the plot; as soon as I had made up my mind that a certain character was guilty, a new piece of evidence would be discovered to deflect suspicion. All of the suspects were introduced early enough for the reader to ponder the guilt or innocence of each. I look forward to more of George's work.

Immer wieder spannend, wenn man London und England kennt. Man kann sich so richtig in die Akteure hinein fühlen.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Lynley und Havers in Cambridge..., 12. Juli 2013
Rezension bezieht sich auf: For the Sake of Elena (Roman) (Taschenbuch)
'For the sake of Elena' zeichnet sich aus durch einen spannenden Kriminalfall, der präzise, bildreich und entspannt erzählt wird. Elizabeth George ist ein Profi mit Worten, wie die folgenden Textabschnitte zeigen (die ich als Beispiel herausgesucht habe für diejenigen, die noch nichts von der Autorin gelesen haben):

'Cambridge police headquarters faced Parker's Piece, a vast green crisscrossed by intersecting paths. Joggers ran here, their breath gusting out in fibrous clouds, while on the grass two Dalmatians – tongues flapping happily – chased after an orange Frisbee thrown by a whip-thin, bearded man whose bald head shone in the morning sun. All of them seemed to be rejoicing in the disappearance of the fog.'*¹

'The fog lay on the city the next morning, a grey blanket of mist that rose like a gas from the surrounding fens and billowed into the air in amorphous clouds that shrouded trees and buildings and roadways and open land, changing everything from common and recognizable substance into mere shape. Cars, lorries, buses and taxis inched their way along the damp pavements of the city streets. Bicyclists slowly swayed through the gloom. Pedestrians huddled into heavy coats and dodged the constant spattering of the drops of condensation that fell from rooflines, window ledges and trees. The two days of wind and sunshine might never have existed.'*²

*¹ S. 116 (Bantam Books; 1992)
*² S. 387
*³ Die Arme: 'Her struggles took their definition from a range of circumstances that far exceeded the family into which she had been born and the manner in which she pronounced her words. These circumstances rose from simple ill-fortune, dominoes of bad luck that had tumbled one upon the other so quickly in the last ten months that she had not been able to stop their progress.'
