3.0 von 5 Sternen I would like it to have more excitement
I liked these books but there were a few dull parts in the beginning of the "Dark Is Rising" and "Over Sea, Under Stone". If there were a few more adventures I would recommend them more.

I first read The Dark is Rising when I was 11, the same age as the main character. I had already devoured the Chronicles of Narnia and loved the genre. Reading that book was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. It is ten years later, and I have read all five books at least half a dozen times, and The Dark is Rising probably 25 or 30 times. I simply never tire of these amazing novels. They opened a whole world to me, full of Welsh and Cornish legends, magic, and so much more. Before there was Harry Potter, there were these novels. Having read J.K. Rowling's series, which is very nice, I can say with no hesitation that these books are a thousand times better. This series is a must-read for both children and adults. I cannot recommend it enough.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A glorious, magical series!, 7. Mai 2000
Von Ein Kunde
I had never heard of these books until I got them for a birthday present several years ago, and I didn't read them for awhile. But when I did - I was stunned (and was kicking myself for not having read them sooner). These are truly great books. Susan Cooper has a writing style that is perfect for these stories of mythological drama and power. At some parts, I get goosebumps from reading because she has such fabulous writing skills, and at the end of the last book, I almost cried - not many books can move me that much. This series is fairly long. It's over a thousand pages, small print. The reader never loses interest because the plot is so intricate, captivating, believable (even when magical doings are occurring right and left - this is a great quality not many books have) and complex that every single page is needed to bring the story to the big climactic confrontation. There are so many complexities and inconspicuous yet important details that you can discover things on the third or fourth readings that you never noticed the first two times. For example, in "Silver on the Tree," Gwion tells Bran and Will that three golden shields were made by King Gwyddno Garanhir for the Light, which took two to places of danger and left the third in Caer Wydyr. I didn't notice until the second or third reading that the other two shields were mentioned in earlier books: one is on the wall with the doors in the room where Will first meets Merriman and the Lady, and the other is on the back of the rocky wall with the doors leading into Craig yr Arden, Bird Rock. Another aspect of the plot is the mystery of it - some of them unsolved. A chest filled with something but which will remain sealed until the time of need, which hopefully will never come - it is never told what is inside it; who were the Sleepers?; who was the king Will took the Sign of Water from?; who is the Lady? ... this adds an extra dimension to these books and keeps you reading thoroughly and carefully, looking for clues to the mysteries. On the other hand, some mysteries are solved - who Hastings is, who the White Rider is, who the Walker is/was ... it is very interesting to find the answers to your questions. I particularly love the part about the Lost Land - that kingdom is so interesting, mysterious and powerful that you are on the edge of your seat, gobbling up the stories and hoping Will and Bran never leave. The end is extremely satisfactory and has an extremely moving mingling of happiness and sadness - it is one of the most effective book endings I have ever read. So - what I've been trying to say for the last four hundred and seventy-three words is: READ THESE BOOKS!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A childhood love, a grown-up treasure, 30. März 2000
Von

This series of books made me want to be a writer when I grew up. I remember distinctly reading these books and realizing the power that authors have to create a world and populate it with living characters. Ms. Cooper has created a universe in which magic lives just under the surface of the "real" world--her theme, that the power of magic is accessible to believers, and that we have a responsibility to fight against evil in both the real and magical realms, continues to resonate with me and many other readers.
I highly recommend The Dark is Rising series to children and adults. It's for a slightly older audience than the Harry Potter series, and makes a nice next level for kids who want more.
I am thrilled that the series is still available and I am adding it to my collection in the hope of passing it on to the children in my life. That, and I'm going to re-read them myself-- they're just too good to pass up!

5.0 von 5 Sternen By far THE BEST BOOKS EVER WRITTEN!, 27. Januar 1997
Von Ein Kunde
These books are without a doubt THE BEST that I have ever read. I first opened them around the age of 8 and devoured ALL of them in an astounding amount of time. They are written as a modern resurgence of ancient celtic mythology. They educate the reader about ancient mythos without their even realizing it (I have read them at least a DOZEN times and it took me awhile to understand this). these novels are much like the Chronicles of Narnia (by C.S. Lewis) in that they are a great story, which has deeper levels if you care to delve into them. The best method I can use to get people to read these is to tell you about my brother. He is a 10 year old boy who is active in sports and hates reading. For school he had to read a book of his choice and I told him to try The Dark Is Rising. It took some doing, but when he really started reading it, he couldn't put it down. Soon after, he read every other book in the series until he had read them all (and was desiring more)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Terrific fantasy series for adults or kids, 22. Oktober 1999
Von
Timothy Susman (Mountain View, CA United States) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
I first read these books when I was eight. I loved them. I most recently re-read them when I was twenty-eight. I still loved them. This is one of the best fantasy series I've ever read, incorporating Celtic legends alongside very real modern-day tales of living. That it is from the perspective of children only serves to make it accessible to children, not to make it inaccessible to adults. The writing is crisp and beautiful: the dialogue is absolutely authentic, engaging, and wonderful; the descriptions are vivid and pull you into the world. I cannot recommend this series too highly--if you love fantasy, or you have a child who does, there are few, if any, better ways to indulge yourself than to pick up these books.

THE DARK IS RISING SEQUENCE IS A BRILLIANT SERIES OF BOOKS ON THE BATTLE OF TWO FORCES - DARK AND LIGHT. THEIR SEARCH, CONDUCTED BY DIFFERENT CHARACTERS IN DIFFERENT BOOKS, LEADS THEM TO THE CLIFFS OF CORNWALL, THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS OF WALES AND FINALLY TO A CONFRONTATION IN THE CHILTERN HILLS. IT IS AN ENCHANTING SERIES, IDEAL FOR CHILDREN FROM 10 YEARS OLD, BUT ONE THAT WILL BE TREASURED BY THEM FOR YEARS TO COME. I READ THE SECOND BOOK AT THE TENDER AGE OF TEN, AND NOW HAVE MY OWN SET OF THE FIVE, WHICH I RE-READ ALL THE TIME!!!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Magic and fantasy at it's best...., 7. Juni 2000
Von
Angela (Thousand Oaks, CA USA) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
I first read this series when I was in grade school, and fell in love with the magic! I wished that I could have been one of the Old Ones, having incredible powers, immortality, and (because of these qualities) dangerous adventures. Nearly 15 years later, I was searching for a gift for a young relative in the family and found The Dark Is Rising series again. I made the purchase fully intending to give it away. That cousin never got the books. I just had to re-read them. And was enchanted once again!
The storyline is great for kids, as one of the main characters, Will Stanton is 11 years old. The magic is fantastic....one of the powers, the ability to make people forget, could definitely be useful. I can think of a couple of instances where I would have loved to use it on my parents! Traveling through time has similar benefits....
But this is not a series just for children. The themes of constant struggle between good and evil, and the means by which evil seeks to attract followers are well developed, with details older readers appreciate. The story about Hawkins is a great example. He is clearly used by both sides, and he makes choices that have hard consequences for himself and others. Ignorance is not an acceptable excuse, and his character demonstrates that people are not entirely good (deserving of extraordinary responsibility) or entirely bad (deserving of condemnation). There is an incredible attention to small details. You definitely pick these up with each reading. There is also enough familiar mythology/folk legend in the stories to make them not only believable, but feel like it is happening now. The series is wonderful. If you like imaginative, gripping stories, I highly recommend this series for adults and children!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Your eyes will open, your life may change - Be True., 15. April 1999
Von Ein Kunde
I started reading these books at the impresianable age of 14. My first encounter with this new world was through 'The Dark is Rising'. I met Will & helped him all I could with his Search for the Seven Symbols. I read this book - unlike any other book. Totaly engrosed I walked through the two smooth doors of the covers and let what I found inside take me from this world into a subtley different one. In awe and fear I was drawn in, ever, ever deeper. Crows, old paths through woods, wolf howls and horses - never have been the same for me since.
I found a master smithy who was tucked away in Cornwall, he had the craft & felt some of what I did.. One evening his apprentice handed me a heavy looking bag - in it a circle of Iron , quarterd by a cross.
I guard this symbol. It is 1 of seven and will remain gaurded until Will asks me for it or the tick of the great grandfather clock stops.
As you can tell - at age 32 - this still has a hold over me! Read them all.. If the first book doesn't grab you - start as many have started with TDIR - you will soon want/need to read the rest. Wonderful settings. ( I have walked and visited many of the locations - they are Real ! Note - difficult to find the Stanton house, but I have a good idea were it lies.. - Look for the Dovecot! ) Kids we all knew and will meet again. Events that are more important than reality. Something that, may - just happen... To that special person, and as we all know - the choosen one might be you.
If you seek the Iron symbol, email me. But you must read the five books and want more..
Clive.. (A fellow walker of paths)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Throughly enjoyable series. I like it very much, 18. April 1999
Von Ein Kunde
I first encountered Susan Cooper's work when I read SEAWARD, for my Children's Literature course his Spring. I enjoyed that book so much that I went out and bought the complete THE DARK IS RISING sequence. I was throughly impressed, It is probably the best series that I have read since C.S. Lewis's THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA.
I liked how Cooper wove the Arthur legend into a twentith century setting, and incorparted so much of the folklore, and festivals that are present in the English landscape. In a truly fastinating way Cooper illustrates the origins of significant days of the year like Twelfth Night.
I also enjoyed her use of Time in this book, she played with the idea non-absolute time; showing how events in the past can influence the future, illustrating that how time is precieved is relative from one person to the next.
The dark is rising deals ultimately with the battle between good and evil, the light and the dark. It is one of the best treatments of the subject since LORD OF THE RINGS. If fact much of The dark is rising is reminicent of Tolkien's masterpiece.
I loved these books and am pleased that I was exposed to them. I recommend them highly. And if you liked these books, please check out SEAWARD, it is a very beautiful book an should not be allowed to fall by the way side.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Some of the best...., 30. Mai 2000
I first read these books when I was in grammar school. They continue to thrill me. Not raised with a television or anything like that, I was taught the -real- folk tales of Great Britain, the legends of my own country. And Cooper's books manage to throw small familiar tastes into a modern story. At times, it's hard to believe that these books have been around for over 20 years.
If you grew up with the stories of the Drowned Hundred, Taliesin, King Arthur, the Great Hunt... trust me, it's all in there. Because of those "historical" details, the story has an even greater British with a capital B feel to it. From the rooks at the Sunday church service to the sheep herders in Wales, every book in this series has a distinct atmosphere to it. The stories flow from book to book, and very few questions are left unanswered.
These books aren't difficult, even for younger readers. But they are so intriguing, the fact that they were written for children doesn't even faze you. They are thrilling, scary, joyful, full of hope...just really good storytelling.
