It was my first book on Artificial Intelligence.
I'm myself not a computer scientist by training, but rather work on a somewhat adjoint field of statistics and computer modelling of dynamical systems. Given that, the book was very accessible for me. If you're OK with the Bayes theorem and the normal distribution, you'll probably have all the mathematical background which is needed to understand the mathematical side of the book.
Classical problems of AI such as decision making, search, prediction, filtering are described in depth. Several dimensions of each problem is discussed, such as: computational costs, the history of the problem (which I often found nearly more inspirational than the main narrative), applicability of different solutions depending on the real world constraints, etc.
