5.0 von 5 Sternen an easy relaxing and funny reading experience
I really enjoy being an armchair traveler... Mr.Lansky's book is just a fast moving, light hearted, mind trip around the world... I am glad he did these incredible things, so I really don't have to wonder if I have missed anything by not actually doing "that thing"... especially the camel stuff...I may pan for emeralds, however, I can't say for sure... nice...

1.0 von 5 Sternen Trite as can be and for non-travelers only
The prose here is trite and superficial, and so are the experiences related by the author. Anyone who's ever traveled will cringe when reading this because Lansky is the kind of tourist that seasoned travelers stay away from--a loud, obnoxious, ignorant frat boy on tour.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Pure Travel Humor, 28. März 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Up the Amazon Without a Paddle (Taschenbuch)
In Up the Amazon Without a Paddle travel writer, Doug Lansky has finally created a chronicle of his humous misadventres from the last 6 years. Lansky, writer for his nationally syndicated column, "Vagabond", writes and travels with an eye for the humorous and with as many misadventures as he finds himself in he certainly needs it. As a backpack traveler, I have found that a sense of humor is what gets you though the rough experiences although they may not seem humorous at the time. One has to laugh to keep their sanity. This book, in order to be appreciated must be taken for what it is-- pure travel humor. I found the stories that I found particularly humorous were "Bless this Mess", "Up the Amazon Without a Paddle","Where no Sand Has Gone Before." "Tanks for the Ride" also makes some nice political commentary. This is a very funny book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen like reading excerpts from my own life, 23. Januar 2000

I laughed out loud! First at the book...and then at the comments made in these reviews! Small minds think only the author and his friends could have enjoyed this book. All I can say is that those people haven't done budget travel over long periods of time. Doug describes many of the same things I've experienced as a backpacker over the last 8 years of travel.
If you don't get the sarcasm and see through to the actual experience, Im sorry for you. This bathroom humor is just what you find on the backpacker trail. Doug's book caught me saying, "I remember that!" over and over again.
And what better way to conjure up a veiw of India for those armchair travelers than to describe its smell. Sorry guys, it DOES smell like that!
And lets face it, "off the beaten path" IS off the beaten path for most of America, it just happens to be pretty beaten to death by us travelers who use the lonely planet as our sacred bible.
The real "ugly American" is the one who sits and passes judgement with out having had the experiences themselves. If you take this book seriously, you miss the point Doug is trying to make. As a traveler, sometimes you have to make jokes about what you are experiencing and when writing home have to put it in terms others can identify with. When reading this book, just sit back, laugh and enjoy the journey. This book is not deep, historical, or culturally indepth, its a collection of funny experiences. Don't try to find deeper meaning and your life will be full of a lot less aingst!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great book if you love Dave Barry's style, 20. November 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Up the Amazon Without a Paddle (Taschenbuch)
This book does not try to be some scholarly anthropological white paper on world cultures. It is meant to look at the lighter side of travel. If this is what you are looking for, then this is what you'll find in this book.
The writing style is strong--as you can see from the other comments, you either love it or hate it. The style is intensely satirical. If you don't like this type of satire, then don't buy the book. On the other hand, there's a good chance you will enjoy this book if you enjoy material authored by Dave Barry--the styles are similar.
Because of the book's strong style, it is difficult--and exhausting--to read cover to cover. This book is meant to be read in pieces over time. Some might call it bathroom reading or a series of good short stories to be read before going to bed.

1.0 von 5 Sternen The Ugly American is alive and well, 29. Oktober 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Up the Amazon Without a Paddle (Taschenbuch)
I have no problem with sarcastic wit, except when it is used to belittle the defenseless. The author seemed to take great pleasure in demonstrating his American superiority to many of the peoples he visited. If some of these people didn't meet his criteria for personal hygiene, then he should attempt to live without indoor plumbing and a fresh supply of water. I was also unimpressed with his tasteless metaphors. However, he does come close to self-examination when he compares himself to a "turd" while squeezing through a cavern in his spelunking adventure. American readers gain no insight on the peoples of the world through this book. However, the peoples of the world, having met Mr. Lansky, are reminded that the Ugly American still lives.

5.0 von 5 Sternen a very funny, winning book, 9. August 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Up the Amazon Without a Paddle (Taschenbuch)
Judging from the reviews, this clearly is a book which is not likely to leave the reader indifferent. My personal experience is that it is a very funny and winning collection of travel vignettes, one which should appeal to anybody who has ever longed to cut-loose and, as the Navy would say, "See the World"--or is it "Come join the Adventure?!!!" I can't remember and it doesn't matter: the point is, if you're the kind of person likely to find humor in ad campaigns such that, then you're probably going to understand and enjoy Mr. Lansky's point-of-view. I recommend picking-up a copy and seeing for yourself. My guess is that you'll be drawn-in and that you'll know right away that this is a writer with a genuine comic talent.

Very enjoyable and funny descriptions of the traveling life. Doug Lansky has a real knack in describing how it feels to be an outsider in many different worlds.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Funnier than Gresh Riley, 8. Juli 1999

I saw this in a local bookstore and just had to read it. Funny and a good read. The world needs more irreverant travel writers like Doug. Also, it's good to see a former fellow Misdemeanor-ite out doing something with his humor...

1.0 von 5 Sternen Is the author writing these good reviews?, 7. Juli 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Up the Amazon Without a Paddle (Taschenbuch)
I read the online reviews here and thought I'd check out this book. Let me be blunt: It is really bad. I couldn't even read more than a few articles. Then I noticed that many of the "glowing" reviews on Amazon for Doug's book read just like Doug's book. Is he stocking the page with reviews. Sound like it. The only reason I can see this book getting a decent review is if the author writes one.
