Nathalie Goldberg seems to be a sincere woman. She has two kids, likes nudity beaches and is a Buddhist. The question is: How do I know that?
I know that because I have read "Writing down the bones", a book on writing, although it reads like an autobiography in some passages.
The two messages that Goldberg has in store for you are the following:
- write with energy
- write with passion and patience
Somehow, conveying this takes her more than 160 pages.
If she had told less of her and more about writing, it might be worth the money, but it isn't.
If you want to start writing, do it, with energy, passion and patience and go buy good books, but not this one in any case.

This is a book made of the stuff it suggests you to do, writing practice, understood as free form, stream of consciousness writing. Its inspirational essays guide you through Mrs Goldberg's creativity process and encourage you to start writing and discover yourself in the process. Some people won't like its cheerful, honest tone, but for some of us writing is more than just craft. If this is your approach, this book will be worth every cent (and I wrote a poem on cheese that has been a great success as a result of this writing practice).

5.0 von 5 Sternen This book is a sleeping giant of energy., 16. Juli 1999
Von Ein Kunde
I bought "Writing Down the Bones" by mistake. When I first got online a few years ago, I was trawling around Amazon's Website and clicked the wrong button, but thought I had corrected my mistake and "unordered" this book. Imagine my surprise when it showed up on my doorstep a few days later. Because I believe there are no accidents, I hung onto the book, knowing I would need it sometime in the future. I was right. A year later, I got a job writing and editing software manuals. (Try making those witty and brilliant!) Two years later, I enrolled in a creative writing course at my local junior college to get the dry taste of computer lingo out of my mouth, and "Writing Down the Bones" was the only required text. Since then, I have used this book to jump-start me when I can't get my brain to turn over in anything other than PC or mainframe mode, because Ms. Goldberg's fearless approach to creativity never fails me. Even though I'm an editor as well as a writer, I agree with her view that mechanics are secondary to the energy attached to the writer's words. Just like the human heart, the structure is dead without the life force to drive it.
I have two suggestions for writing exercises. First, write haiku on Post-It notes. (I find it useful to challenge myself to express the essence in as few words as possible.) Then get up from whatever you're not quite doing, and buy this book. After all, you're reading this review, and there are no accidents. Good luck!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A triumph! Very inspirational, 9. Juni 2000
This is perhaps one of the most helpful books on writing I've ever read. Natalie Goldberg is part guru, part therapist, part best friend. I highly recommend this book to anyone who writes for a living, wishes they wrote for a living and especially for anyone who's convinced they can't ever write for a living. She'll remind you what you love so much about the written word and reawaken your enthusiasm for literature. Best of all she'll encourage you all the way!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Into the Void and Out With Ideas, 17. Juni 1997
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within (Taschenbuch)
Follow the advice that Ms Goldberg gives and let yourself become one with the page. There is no paper, no hand, no pen, no block. There is the void, the silence, and the act of creation and when you stop, there is your novel, complete and perfect before you on the page.
Well, alright, perhaps not perfect but this marriage of Zen and common sense, beautifully written and blazingly clear, is a wonderful manual for any writer.Indeed for anyone that takes a moment to look at the world around them, anyone who does more than simply move unthinkingly through their life like a robot, this book is a rare delight.
Once read thoroughly, it can be used randomly as an antidote to writer's block. Open almost any page and begin reading to feel the log jam in your cortex start to shift and jostle. Your fingers flex, your eye sparkles. The words tumble over themselves as ideas outpace your hand and your writing becomes a hellish scrawl. Buy a computer and take a speed typing course.
My thanks to Ms Goldberg for a truly inspirational book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A well-earned reputation for greatness, 22. Juni 2000
Von Ein Kunde
When I picked up this book at the age of 12, I was unaware of the fact that it had already become a sort of writers' bible in the industry. Later, when I did become aware, I was not at all suprised. Natalie blends the practical with the spiritual in a way that only an artist can appreciate and desperately need. That rainy afternoon I first began to read it, which I remember well, led to years of writing and stacks of spiral notebooks in wobbly towers that nearly reach the ceiling of my basement. Let others label it as "new-age" or "self-indulgent" but for myself, and for thousands of others, it has been the key to a life of writing. Natalie gives us all permission, and I for one am so glad.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Big surprise in a pocket book..., 22. Mai 2000
Von

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within (Taschenbuch)
When you start out writing, you get this idea that there's a magic potion or some secret understanding that a Vonnegut or Mallon have to be able to write. You maybe get other books that "show you how to write" and get bogged down in a set of rules only to get frustrated and search for another book of rules. This book, although shocking in it's miniature pocket-book size, is the anti-rulebook for writers. So what immeasurably valuable idea did I walk away from this book with? The idea that writing's like anything else you want to be good at... practice.
I didn't like the splatterings of eastern mysticism in it, but the points work even without them.
If you want to find your courage and, thusly, your voice in your writing - you should definitely read through this book and maybe toss out a couple of those overpriced compendiums on how to write collecting dust on your shelf.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very inspiring and well worth re-reading regularly, 10. Januar 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within (Taschenbuch)
The author encourages us to notice the details in life and to celebrate everything which pleases us or makes an impression on us, as that is what makes writing lively and personal. Her book has also inspired me to carry on writing in my notebook even when I don't believe I'm a very good writer, as all writing practice is "composting" which could eventually result in some great ideas coming through. I am always dipping into this book and attempting to follow the author's suggestions. I have given copies to two other people who are keen amateur writers, and I usually take mine with me when I go away. All in all, I think this book offers hope to those who like writing but don't believe they're great writers or aren't even sure what they want to say. As the author says, if you care about what you're doing, it probably will be good. I have had a lot of fun as a result of reading this.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I carry only two books with me this one and my journal., 22. Februar 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within (Taschenbuch)
Wherever I go, I carry two books with me. My writing journal and Writing Down the Bones. Natalie Goldberg has something for everyone in this book, from the amateur to professional writer. My writing has improved dramatically since I picked up this book. Before, I was too mechanical about writing. I would sit down with a pen and write about a certain topic. But now, with Goldberg's help, I write whatever strikes me and I just let the pen flow across the pages of my journal. I wish I would have found this book ten years ago.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The most practical tool a writer can have in their kit!, 3. August 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Natalie Goldberg has given us a handbook that no serious writer can afford to be without. Writing Down the Bones brings us through fun and inspirational exercises to get the creative juices flowing, while all the while reminding us just why it is we write. I've never been the same after reading and taking this book to heart. It should be on every writer's bookshelf at the very least; carry it with you if you can!
