Patriot Games Tom Clancy, author of the book Patriot Games, is one of the most renowned authors of books that deal with modern war and terrorism. The book Patriot Games is a book that deals with modern day terrorism, and a man named Jack Ryan. The book was fantastic, and would be recommended for anyone (not children, of course) who have a remote interest in political war against terrorist organizations. The book begins in telling a life summary of Jack Ryan, retired Marine officer, who has taken up a historian profession. During the beginning of the book, Mr. Ryan was in England on a vacation, when he comes accords a terrorist attack on the Royal family of England. The attack occurs right in the middle of downtown London, exactly where Jack Ryan is. He foils the assassination attempt, and is knighted by the King and Queen of England. Later in the book, the terrorist organization responsible for the assassination attempt, tries to gain revenge on Jack by making assassination attempts on him and his loved ones, but the terrorists do this in the United States. After a while, the CIA gets word of all of the assassination attempts, and Jack along with the CIA try to apprehend the long running terrorist group. The book had many surprising twists, that led to exciting conclusions. This was very well written book on terrorists, their organizations, the impact they have on every-day life, and the men and women who stop them. If I had to rate the book (on a scale of 1-10), the book would receive a perfect 10.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Though long, the book is well worth the time., 18. Mai 1999

Patriot Games by Tom Clancy
If you're a fan of long, realistic, action filled novels, you'll love Patriot Games, but if you enjoy reading short books filled with pure action and suspense, don't even bother trying to read it, unless you are feeling adventurous. Patriot Games dives into the world of terrorism matched only by Rainbow Six.
It starts with amazing action- a terrorist attack upon the Prince and Princess of England. John Ryan, the hero of Hunt for the Red October and Clear and Present Danger, is caught in the middle. He stops the attack and kills one of the attackers; but unknowingly, he has brought himself into the world of terrorism and the cubicles of the CIA. Clancy describes beautifully, as he always does.
But then comes the part that can cause one to abandon the book: the huge number of pages that separates the action. However, if you have enough stamina and survive the dull parts, you soon get pulled back in as terrorist activity spreads for the first time into the United States. It is one of Clancy's finest, and is a thrill to read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Clancy the unbeatable, 29. Juli 2000
Von
Jonathan Wang (Chino Hills, California United States) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
Once again Clancy delievers a bang up action thriller that is unbeatable by any other author. It is about a guy named John Ryan who thwarted a terrorist attack on England's Royal Family. He then has to come face to face with the realities of his heroism and suffers the consequences. His wife adn daughter are attacked by the ULA( Ulster liberation army) and he is having the Royal Family over for dinner! But all goes to hell when the dinner is interrupted by a group of uninvited guest, the ULA. Now John must fight to save not only his family, but once again the Royal Family! I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to keep up with this top notch action thriller! The action never stops!

It is not often I say this-but see the movie, don't read the book. The movie is far more polished, believeable, and interesting. And I generally do like Tom Clancy-we went to the same college and I am familiar with the Annapolis area. But portions of this book are almost painful to read. It is not very well written, it often gets bogged down in ridiculous minutae. Several pages are devoted to Ryan's fear of flying on the Concord-my advice is just skip over these sections. The story is interesting but the sexism , unrealistic scenarios, and pompousness severely detract from it. This book is pure fantasy-whomever believes it to be realistic needs a serious reality check. Jack Ryan appears to be Tom Clancy's alter ego. He is annoying and juvenile-from his ludicrous pompous banter with the Royals to his successful taking on of a defense lawyer when he is supposed to giving testimony as a witness. If I were Prince Charles I would seriously consider suing Mr. Clancy for libel. I know Ryan is supposed to be a larger-than-life hero but there comes a point when his pompousness and chauvenism is simply too much to take. Mr. Clancy had reached and exceeded that point. The Hunt for Red October was a well-written, suspenseful book-read it instead.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Good as a thriller, but one-sided, 24. Oktober 1997
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Patriot Games (Tom Clancy) (Hörkassette)
Patriot Games is certainly a powerful thriller. The book catches you up and sweeps you along in its flow. However, there are some rocks in that flow. Tom Clancy seems to consistently take only one side of all the issues at hand - and while this is common in thrillers, in this book it reaches extremes that almost sickened me. There is a general refusal to acknowledge that terrorists or rebels ever have a cause or a reason to do what they are doing other than greed. The IRA are portrayed as evil murderers without a shred of conscience, and the protagonist Jack Ryan frequently goes off into philosophical reflections on how horrible and evil terrorists are (e.g., they can't face a "real" army, they always murder innocents, etc.)
It could be argued that thrillers cannot funciton without some bias, but I think Tom Clancy takes it too far.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Makes you feel like you're in the gunsights . . ., 13. Januar 2000
This book, while not quite the same as Red Storm Rising, was nonetheless a great book! This is the intro for Clancy's main character, CIA analys/historian/Ex-Marine Jack Ryan. It starts out with a nice, calm walk in the park on a UK vacation, until a terrorist attack on England's Royla Family leaves Ryan a hero for thwarting the attack, his shoulder all banged up, and a target for the Ulster Liberation Army, a spinoff of the IRA. Now he finds that his family is endangered, with the terrorist suddenly operating in the IRA neutral country of America. When the terrorists make an attempt on his wife and kid, he resolves to not let them endanger him or his family again. But when a party with the original victims of the Royal Family is crashed by gun-toting Irishmen, Jack must fight to protect his family, his friends, and himself.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Wretched Excess, 27. November 1999
Von Ein Kunde
I enjoyed Hunt For Red October and Red Storm Rising for what they were -- pulp fiction with lots of action and enough juicy details about hardware and weaponry to satisfy a modern techno-fetish. Great literature they're not, but they're entertaining. But THIS...
Clancy obviously read super-hero comic books when he was a kid. His Jack Ryan is unbelievably heroic. Scant pages into the book he's knighted by the Queen, and not long after that he's giving the Prince a pep talk and handing him back his manhood. (No, I'm not kidding.) Golly, that Jack knows everything and can do anything! Let's make him President!
If you are a ten-year-old (or just think like one) you might like this book. If you're looking for something that doesn't insult your intelligence, look elsewhere.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A NailBiter!, 24. Juli 2000
Von
Melvin Hunt (Cleveland,, Texas United States) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
Jack Ryan gets into a conflict with some of the most dangerous people in the world. Ryan plays a role in stifling an attack on Prince Charles. He then testifies against The IRA gunmen who were involved in the attack. This immediately makes him a target of the IRA leaders who were imprisoned. The fanatical IRA leader is broken out of prison. His first and foremost mission in life is to kill Ryan and his family. By being ruthless and evasive Ryan manages to evade several attempts on his life. Tom Clancy shows a good knowledge of the world of terrorism by his usage of the Bekka Valley in this story. The ending of this story is very exciting and proved to be a good way to end a good book. Buy and read this book. You will not be dissapointed.

5.0 von 5 Sternen If you've only seen the movie, buy this book now!, 4. Juli 2000
"Patriot Games" is another example of Tom Clancy's superb work. A taut thriller about vengeance and the terrorist mind, this is a page-turner that you'll have trouble putting down.
If you've only seen the movie, you've missed out on the most colorful character in the story, Gunnery Sgt. Breckenridge of the Naval Academy Security Detachment. It is the Gunny whom Jack Ryan turns to when he first feels the need to sharpen his weapons skills to defend his family from the threat of the terrorists. He's easily the most interesting good guy in the book, and I STILL can't believe they completely cut him out for the movie!
So buy this book, if only for the scenes with Gunny Breckenridge.

5.0 von 5 Sternen THE MOVIE SUCKED BUT THE BOOK IS SPECTACULAR!!, 17. Juli 1998
Von Ein Kunde
I watched the movie before I read the book and when I read the book I had to go back and watch the movie again! What were they thinking when they made this movie?!?! The (movie) plot is all messed up and half the characters from the book aren't even there!! The ending was a real sham and Harrison Ford should be ashamed to even be in this movie. As for the book I found it refreshing after the techno jargon-riddled Hunt for Red October. I think this is one of my favorite Clancys because of the way he makes the terrorist's need for revenge the main focus of the book. A definite must-read in the Jack Ryan series.
