5.0 von 5 Sternen How perfect it was
How would you feel if you had just become the Yankees manager, when the man who had hired you was George Steinbrenner, a man notorious for "putting the revolving door on managers?" He is famous for hiring and firing managers. That is what happened to Joe Torre in 1996, yet he is considered one of the best managers in baseball. Tim McCarver uncovers why Joe...

Tim McCarver's "The Perfect Season" does not live up to its title....namely, that the 1998 baseball season was the best ever. Tim McCarver's "The Perfect Season" does not live up to its title....namely, that the 1998 baseball season was the best ever. No one doubts McCarver's expertise in the game, but there's a long-windedness about this book, much like his broadcast style. McCarver has too many chapters devoted to players whose entry into the book was made because they "hit 50 doubles and stole 50 bases in one season". I know that baseball is a game of statistics but this kind of minutiae (or"dim-minutiae") is as meaningless as meat filler in a hamburger patty or a weatherman's recitation of the wind-chill factor....it gets boring very quickly. There are certainly some good chapters and well-deserved entries (the New York Yankees, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire, and a wonderful tribute to Roger Maris), but I found myself being able to put this book down many times, even though the chapters are quite short. It's simply bogged down with too much useless detail.

He is famous for hiring and firing managers. That is what happened to Joe Torre in 1996, yet he is considered one of the best managers in baseball. Tim McCarver uncovers why Joe Torre is still the Yankees manager and much more in his great non-fiction book, The perfect season. McCarver's book recognizes some of the great achievements in 1998 that were not given attention because of the home run chase and David Wells' perfect game. In the book, McCarver gets quite up close and personal when he talks about some of baseball's past heros, being a former ballplayer himself. At the end of the book, McCarver analyzes the playoffs and the key plays and mistakes in them. His book uncovers how great the 1998 baseball season really was.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great book on a number of baseball stars from 1999., 1. August 1999
Von Ein Kunde
The book written by Mr. Tim McCarver, is a great book to read about some of the players who made a major contribution to the special summer of baseball which took place during the perfect season of 1998. He does a great job in useing diffrent players from diffrent teams to show how each one of the players from there respective teams each made a lasting impression on baseball during the year of 1998. The writter did a super job in picking diffrent players, and showing the reader how each one of the players he profiled made a contribution to the season of 1998. Also the book itself was very well written, and a joy to read. This book chould very well be read by any age reader, and in turn that reader whould enjoy this book. Super baseball reading at it's best.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A QUICK READ ON THE '98 SEASON, 27. März 2000
The 1998 baseball season was, indeed, a memorable one, and Tim McCarver does a good job of reviewing it. The McGuire/Sosa home run battle made it especially so, and their respect for each other and the game added to it. Tim gives his opinions and analysis of events of the season which add to the book's interest. Brief chapters are devoted to such players as Dan Quisenberry and Eric Davis. The Yankees show what it takes to make a winning team by their ability to win in whatever way the other team makes available to them. The book was easy to read and I found it interesting, but I certainly wouldn't call it a classic by any means.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Despite McCarver's Babbling, Some Good Stories, 14. April 1999
Von Ein Kunde
This book is absolutely terrible, with McCarver making weak connections between moments of the season. Also, McCarver gives little evidence as to why the 1998 season was the best (what is so great about the Yankees running away with it? Great only if you're a Yankee fan). There are some good stories, but the book would be improved if McCarver just kept his feeble minded opinion out of it. I don't know how the man has an announcing job after all these years.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A wonderful re-telling of a wonderful season., 19. Juni 1999
Von Ein Kunde
The 1998 baseball season was so good that we have yet to fully appreciate it. That's why this book is so important -- in a vivid, exciting way we re-live that special season and come to fully appreciate it. Last year was an historic baseball season, and as time goes on this book will be even more vital as an eyewitness account by baseball's most perceptive broadcaster. After saying all that, the book was just a lot of fun and a good read.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Baseball becoming WWF-ized, 7. Mai 1999
Von Ein Kunde
1998 the perfect season? Yeah, right. Sammy Sosa hits 66 homeruns? PUH-lease. The ball was jackrabbitted up to create fan interest. The author, being a former catcher, is biased for hitters, but as far as the league goes homeruns = more money. I'd rather see an honest game than one where the fans are manipulated.

1998 was a great year for baseball and the book perfectly captures it. I learned so much I didn't know about the players and about how the game is played.. He is so informative about the playoffs. I'd recommend it to all baseball fans and to anyone who wants to learn about baseball.
