Howard Zinn's memoir serves as an outlet into the mind and backround of one of the most important historians of our time. Zinn knows how to tell a story but at the same time educate. 5.0 von 5 Sternen an informative easy read, 2. März 2000
Zinn's casual biography is a really pleasant read, probably because he doesn't attempt to write an exhaustive account of his illustrious life. Rather, he spends more time describing the events he witnessed and, more importantly, the people he met. "You Can't Be Neutral" can be read simply for the joy of it or to get some more background information on one of America's premier social historians, but it can also be used as a supplementary source for the civil rights movement and even the effects of World War II on war veterans. Zinn's description of his experiences in the South just before and during the Civil Rights movement are fascinating, they really give the reader a feel for the frustration felt by the movement's protagonists and the atmosphere of hope they created. I highly recommend to this book to anyone.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The life and times of America's greatest social historian, 17. Dezember 1996
Von Ein Kunde
For anyone who grew up in the 20th century, this book is a
must read. This autobiography chronicles the life and times
of Howard Zinn, America's foremost social historian. From
his days growing up poor in New York to his service is the
Second World War to his work with the SNCC in the Civil
Rights movement, Zinn tells the story in a personal fashion
with poignant detail and antecdotes and tales that will
make you laugh and make you cry. This is one of the best
autobiographies of the 1990's, and is a must read for all
fans of history, Howard Zinn, and the human bonds that bring
us all together.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Zinn is a Hero, 25. April 2000
This biographical look at Zinn's life is a great introduction to a man who is fully huamn. Zinn has the ability to cross political lines and show the human side to much of the "60's movement". Do not think that you will get an unbiased view however. Zinn is very up front with his views and holds that all knowledge is slanted in some way. I wish that all conservatives and liberals could read Zinn with an open mind......alas the world isn't perfect.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Essential Zinn, 16. Januar 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Zinn's autobiography, somewhat loosely organized, is an essential read for anyone wishing to fully understand his views from his "People's History". It's easy to mistake his revisionist history as filled with hatred for the United States, but this view is quickly destroyed by "You Can't Be Neutral". His books expose the shameful history of the United States, but retain and convey hope for future generations.
