After years in high school living on pasta because I didn't know how to cook anything else, I found this book. The recipies are optimized for the fewest possible ingredients and the least ammount of cooking time, and it tells you how to do everything. This is a wonderful book. All the recepies are appetizing; nothing has a title like "leek-tofu-squash curry." I mailed copies of this book to all my vegetarian friends. If you're short on time, don't like grocery shopping or are intimidated by vegetarian cookery, this book is exactly what you're looking for.

The recipes here feed one or two, when feeding many just won't do. The recipes contain no shred of meat, yet are a gustatory treat! They're a tribute to Ms. Raymond's art. To own this book is very smart.

I really like the book, their are very good tips in there. But for me half of the book is not useful.
The recipes are very very simple, as they don't really add any new ideas for me. I found some great recipes but you really need to search between the rest to find them.
The sections with sandwiches and pizzas for instance are not needed in my opinion, at least not so many as the basic idea is the same.
Also the book lags a bit of a logical structure for me, and a index for ingredients would help as well (to find a recipe that fits with what you have in you fridge).

overall, a good beginners-book.

The thing I liked about this book was that the recipes taste complex and sophisticated, but they're easy enough for a busy college student to make. The ingredients are inexpensive and easy to find, too. Raymond takes classics from all over the world and simplifies them for the first-time cook, keeping their essences intact. The other good thing is that the food is very healthy and low-fat. No college student who uses this book will need to worry about the "freshman 15". I think it would make a great gift for the college-bound.

I have turned to this cookbook many times for easy recipes and tips on some of the basics (how to roast a pepper?) Not all of the recipes were equally satisfying -- but I guess that's true of almost any cookbook, so the point is that some of these recipes really didn't really work for me. In particular, some of the tofu recipes disappointed me. But overall I like the book and would recommend it to people who need help with the basics of vegetarian cooking.

This practical resource for those new to vegetarian cooking offers quick renditions of global culinary favorites (hummus in 8 minutes; a lovely Pad Thai in just 20 minutes), some dependable vegetarian classics (pasta primavera and roasted red bell peppers), and a sprinkling of off-beat gems (beer pancakes, "Miso-Happy" soup). A glossary of cooking terms and a guide to shopping for produce give advice even veteran foodies can learn from.

Carole Raymond's newest book has all the charm and wonder and ease of her first cookbook that had some of us actually looking forward to packing our children's lunches. This book is not just for students. Or cheap cooks. It is for anyone who loves the adventure of cooking simply but wants the meal to look and taste like a million dollars. The fact that it's fun to read and good for you, makes this little book a real bargain.

Carole Raymond has written a great primer for vegetarian student cooks of all ages. It's the book mom would like to have sent with her kids to school. It's also great for busy daytime professionals who are studying at night to keep up and get ahead. A few simple tasty ingredients per recipe and short prep time make this a practical reference--the kind with food stains and dog ears from so much use. Highly recommended.

Until I received this book as a gift, I had no idea it was so easy and tasty to eat vegetarian. I am not a student, I am an adult with health problems. It was suggested to me that I alter my diet to that of a vegetarian. And boy do I feel better already. I highly recommend this book to any beginning vegetarian or to any vegetarian period. My Thanks to Carole Raymnond for sharing her expertise with the world!

The recipes in Student's Vegetarian Cookbook are designed for people with not much money and even less time. The recipes use easily obtained fresh and prepared ingredients and each recipe gives preparation and cooking times. The book includes a nice blend of vegan and non-vegan dishes as well as pointers on products and preparation for the beginning vegetarian. Great breakfast ideas, salads and bean dishes!
