Rezension bezieht sich auf: Armageddon in Stalingrad: September-November 1942 (Modern War Studies) (Gebundene Ausgabe)
The book covers comprehensivly the period from the attack on he suburbs at the begin of September to the last attack in the Baricady Gun Factory on November 20th 1942. Each Chapter and subchapter depicts of one microbattle on a higher tactical scale (battalion and above) in the typical David Glantz style ' with a lot of Soviet army orders , army reports, biographies of Soviet leaders, very detailed maps and sketches but well balanced with recently published data and information on the German side. The text shown how fine tuned the Soviets managed to feed just enough reserves into the fray of the battle to slow down and finally halt the Germans by sheer attrition, how essential the transfer of these reserves across the Volga was and how the diversion on the flanks of the German spearhead into the city as to keep possible reserves for the urban warfare fixed outside the city. The easy repulses of these Soviet attacks on the flanks kept the German optimistic to hold at bay any force the Soviets could commit against them in these regions in the future. The casuality rate in all the theatres of Case Blue was about 1: 5 regardless of who was attacking but the dramatic sideshow at Stalingrad overshadowed the definite failure of the German Operations in the Caucasus.
This is in my opinion one of the best books by David Glantz and a further proof that the collaboration with Jonathan House brings constantly superior results
