In this book, the author tries to prove that one of Jane Austen's principal aims in writing and publishing her novels was to provide an education in strategic thinking to young unmarried women. This claim may sound eccentric but Chwe presents an abundance of evidence (culled from the novels) to support his claim. His evidence even suggests that Jane Austen discovered several fundemental insights of 20th-century game theory in the early 19th century. Thus calling Jane Austen a game theorist seems justified.
Chwe's book is a readable, non-technical primer on basic game theory and a valuable addition to the literature on Austen's novels.
