5.0 von 5 Sternen The ultimate guide to Japanese soul, 6. Juni 2006
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Chrysanthemum and the Sword (Taschenbuch)
Ruth Benedicts book "The Crysanthemum and the Sword" remains to this day the most accurate description of what is indeed a civilisation so different from the Judeo-Christian civilisation of Europe and the United States, that many travelers to Japan never realize just how far away from home they truly are.

Commissioned during the Second world war by the US army as part of an attempt to understand an enemy whose behavior defied conventional explanations, the book draws heavily on Ruth Benedics academic and humanitarian background as well as on many interviews of American Japanese at the time.

Written before the nefarious times of political correctness, the book sympathetically dissects the various social, historical, behavioral and cultural layers of Japanese culture.

Outdated by 50 years? For those who have lived in Japan, it is interesting to discover behind the undoubtedly modern state, time and again the immutable currents of Japanese thought and philosophy described by Ruth Benedict. One of the greates transcultural books ever written. And fun to read, too!
