4.0 von 5 Sternen really a cookbook
After a (too?) short introduction into the concepts and motivation for an SOA the book rapidly enters the technological realization of elementary bits and pieces that help you to realize real world services without too many distracting bells and whistles.

A great book if you want to get going quickly while still having some insight into the very complex tools you have to handle when doing web services.

I really like it!

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Java SOA Cookbook (Taschenbuch)
I bought this book when I was a beginner in the field of Service-Oriented Architecture. I already had several years of experience in professional Java programming, though, so I thought that this would be the perfect introduction to SOA for me. I was mistaken...

- Some of the technical chapters in this book are really hard to understand, even for trained Java programmers.

- In other parts the author writes on a very shallow level, e.g. the chapter on ESB doesn't get beyond mere diagrams. Benefits and drawbacks of using an ESB are still not clear to me.

- Chapters are subdivided into many "Problem - Solution - Discussion" tuples. I guess the idea of doing it like this was that a reader with a certain problem, may search and find this particular issue solved and discussed without having to read through unimportant information. While this sounds like a good thing it turns out to be really annoying for the flow of reading. There just doesn't seem to be a common thread in the book's contents.

- The book offers surprisingly little information despite its 700 pages. The information that is available is often misplaced. For instance, in the explanation of what a service is (page 5) the author writes "[The service's] interface and its implementation can be decorated with extensions that come into effect at runtime". I am absolutely certain that no reader, who is just starting to learn SOA will know (1) what the interface and the implementation of a service is (2) what an extension is (3) how a service has a decoration and (4) what the runtime of a service is. Ergo, this sentence (and in fact the whole section) is absolutely meaningless and superfluous to every non-expert. Unfortunately this is not an exceptional case but rather common throughout the entire book.

My recommendation: Don't buy it! I know that there are very few (if any) books with a similar focus, and this may seem very tempting. But don't!
