5.0 von 5 Sternen The Cotton Malone series continues, 19. August 2013
This is the latest in the series of thrillers by Steve Barry about his hero Cotton Malone. Cotton is a retired government agent from the justice department. He now owns a bookstore in Denmark. However he just happened to be in a convenient for location for a current project.

The book is not a simple agent story. The project is tied to the Lockerbie Bomber, and pressure to not extradite. To do this we have to dive into some English history (Steve Berry stretches the history). This is mixed with Cotton's previous personal life. It can get convoluted at times.

If you like well rounded agents and speculative history this is the book or you.

I have been a huge fan of Steve Berry's books for a long time, and when his previous one about Columbus came out, I found it to be a big steaming pile of crap, which quite frankly shocked me. How could an author of the stature of Steve Berry write such a pile of bollocks? But every author has their off-days, so I marked that one down to a one-off and waited for his next book, which is this one - The King's Deception. Cool title, I thought. Steve might be back in action!

But well...although it isn't as bad as the Columbus book, it was still a tiresome and sometimes boring slog to get through. The history was solid, but to be quite frank (and without giving away any plot points), the plot was quite ridiculous. When you finally get to the crux of the book, and you realise the direction Berry is taking it, you will be thinking "WTF? Has Berry gone off his meds or what?".

Some of the characters are also quite boring, such as Ian the street kid, who you just want to fall off a bridge somewhere and never come back. The CIA agent is also rather obnoxious, but thankfully Malone's son, Gary, manages to stay quiet and not become too much of an annoying character. He does his part without managing to piss everyone off in the process.

It took a lot of willpower to get to the end of this book, and I don't like fighting the urge to stop reading and throw the book in the corner. So Steve had better improve quickly with his next book - The Lincoln Myth - due out next year - otherwise I am going to stop reading his stuff. And that would be a big pity indeed.

The King's Deception by S. Berry is a Little bit different than his other Cotton Malone books. This is personal but still a must read.
