1.0 von 5 Sternen naja..
Grob gesagt ist das Buch einfach nicht wie beschrieben - anderes Cover, völlig vergilbte Seiten, Eselsohren, Risse - uralt.
The book is not how I expected it to be - good. It's old. Wrong Cover, yellow sites, wrinkles and cracks.

I was pleasantly surprised when I read this book. I set myself the task as one of those "must read when I have the time" classics. The novel is very warm. The characters are so wonderful and human without being necessarily good or bad. The gentle and respectful way these characters were presented made an enormous impression on me. Descriptions of family relations, social relations and even people's innermost feelings seemed very insightful and marvellously put. I realise this was translated from the Russian, but I have rarely read such well written prose, so perfectly crafted. I am glad to just know that such literature exists. It was a real joy to read on so many levels.

5.0 von 5 Sternen My favorite book of all time, not to mention a classic!, 7. Juli 1999

Words cannot describe Tolstoy's brilliance in creating this wonderful novel. It may take quite a while to read, but it is worth every minute! In fact, I had never felt sad at the end of a book or wished it would continue forever until I read Anna Karenina -- I wanted to cry when I finished the last page! I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to take a challenge and read a lengthy, yet fulfilling work. It is truly a masterpiece in every manner.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A long novel that pays good dividends for reading, 2. April 1998

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Anna Karenina (Taschenbuch)
I enjoyed reading the other reviews on this web page. I, too, found this book a pleasureable reading experience, though it took some patience to stick with a fairly long reading project. Anna's husband, Karenin, is often overlooked in discussions of this book, except for an occasional comment about the "loveless" marriage he and Anna had. Yet when Anna walked out to elope with Vronsky, she hurt not only her son but her husband as well; and while this book does deal with contemporary Russian social mores, its focus is really on morality, on choices of the soul, that people like Anna, Vronsky, or Levin make. Tolstoy shows in this novel that moral choices DO matter, and that these decisions have meaningful consequences. For Anna, it ended in the tragedy of her suicide. For Levin, his realization that he truly did love his family, even if he didn't understand all of the metaphysical issues he frequently contemplated. This is one of those novels that encourages repeated readings, as there is too much food for thought to be adequately digested in one go around. If you are considering whether or not to purchase this novel, then by all means buy it. It will give you plenty to think about now and in repeated readings in the years to come.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An meaningful book focusing on the importance of love., 10. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Anna Karenina (Taschenbuch)
Tolstoy's Anna Karenina gripped me by the heart from the moment I sat down and started to read it. The thoughts of Levin, Dolly, Kitty, and Vronsky are all ones we have shared at some point in our lives. Throughout the novel, Tolstoy constantly brings up that eternal question of "Is it better to have money or is it better to have love?" When reading, pay close attention to Levin's and Dolly's encounterings with the working peasants. As in so many of Tolstoy's writings, he brings up important social commentaries about the increasingly familiar socialistic attitude pervading Russia. This is an important book from this aspect but it is more important in that it tells of the human experience in terms that anyone who has ever been in love, and felt that undescribable feeling, can understand and relive. I encourage everyone to read Anna Karenina and relish its 950+ pages.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Keeps up the good name of Russian authors, 29. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Anna Karenina (Taschenbuch)
This is an excellent book keeping in with the tradition of russian authors. The book gives an excellent description of erstwhile russia. The characters are very much alive and the extraordinary point of this novel is though its bittersweet and full of tragic incidents, there is no scope for hating any character except may be ironically the heroine- ANNA. This says a lot for the author.
Somehow, I couldn't find the character of ANNA upto my test. I don't defend Karenin but I do think he deserved a better deal. Everyone has his own way of loving others and that is something one should but rarely does accept. Also Vronsky, though is portrayed a shallow young man with a good heart, he doesn't evoke sympathy from the readers.
All in all too much emphasis on love and not understandably so.

4.0 von 5 Sternen My introduction to Tolstoy, 20. Dezember 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Anna Karenina (Taschenbuch)
I'm not sure what moved me to take on this book as my introduction to Tolstoy, but I'm glad I did. I found the writing (partial credit to the translator) to be rich without being presumptuous. The story development was magnificent, so much more than just plot development; I loved the "background" stories that had little to do with the main plot but which added dimension to the characters. Still, about 2/3 of the way through I became bored, at which point I almost gave up the book. I'm glad I persevered, though - the ending was magnificent. (Side note: as a feminist, it was gratifying to see that the adulterous MAN paid a price for his indiscretion too, in some ways even a dearer price than Anna.)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Not for the weak of heart!, 6. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Anna Karenina (Taschenbuch)
The work of Leo Tolstoy and other Russian authors has always been slightly misunderstood. Generally this was attributed to the fact that Russia and America used to be on unfriendly terms. All of that beside, Dostoevsky himself once called Anna Karenin(a) "a perfect work of art," and Tolstoy "the god of art." The novel is full of drama and heartbreaking moments, I warn those who are lovesick or recently dumped: you will expierience the full effect of Anna Karenina. Tolstoy himself was very emotional and in this novel he opens a virtual waterfall of complex emotions and portrays them with astonishing detail. In short, a must read!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great inroduction to Tolstoy, 4. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Anna Karenina (Taschenbuch)
Anna Karenina is the first Tolstoy book I've read, and it left me thirsty for more. A combination of intrigue, romance, ethical dilemma and the wonderful Russian society. You certainly don't find writers like this nowadays, an unfortunate truth of our times and culture. I encourage anyone and everyone to pick this one up. It may take a little time and patience (especially if your not used to older writing), but worth every bit of the effort.

5.0 von 5 Sternen One of my all time best classics, 26. November 2013
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Anna Karenina (Taschenbuch)
Anna Karenina is a remarkable story by one of the few mega-novelists of all times. In every way, it is an ageless story that is more real than fiction. I decided to read a copy of this book on my way to vacation last the summer and ended up spending most of my first week being glued to the book. Though it is a Russian story of a century and a half ago, its essence still resonates today.

Anna who is married to the wealthy and older Karenin lives a life of comfort without any excitement, a life that is full of routines and no zest. It is a life she had become used to until she meets the elegant Vronsky and falls in love. Now she must pay the price of adultery or seek marital stability and forgo the echoes of her heart, a soul searching trial that destabilizes the life of her family and that of her lover. In essence she abandons the meaning for her life and pursues the zest of life.

On the other hand is Levine who is in search of the meaning of life and abandons the zest of life for a purposeful life that includes a family, ideas on the advancement of humanism, being at peace with ones world and hard work in is farm and being at peace with God.

In a way, both Levine and Anna can not be blamed for opting considering one choice above the other. They all wanted happiness without having evil intentions and found a balance between the zest of life and the search of its meaning in their own different ways, hurting and find love in the process and in the end, enriching and destroying themselves in their different ways. A highly recommended read and the most insightful love story I have ever read. The Union Moujik , Doctor Zhivago , Eugene Onegin are some of the other books set in Russia that I enjoyed alongside Anna Karenina.
