5.0 von 5 Sternen Reads like you were there
"Shout!" has such an eye for detail that the reader feels they were with the Beatles throughout their history, from the distant childhood days in Liverpool to the not-do-distant days of "Abbey Road" and their break-up. While everyone knows the group split apart, it's Norman's keen observances and poignant style that draw you in, and make you care how it all happened...

3.0 von 5 Sternen good but...
this is a good book, but norman really drags it out! no offence to any one (belive me i am CRAZY about the beatles! ) but this book is just plain boring! it does a bad job of capturing the beatles essence, and just left the facts. it is better as a reference then a book to sit down to read. sorry, but that is the truth!

"Shout!" has such an eye for detail that the reader feels they were with the Beatles throughout their history, from the distant childhood days in Liverpool to the not-do-distant days of "Abbey Road" and their break-up. While everyone knows the group split apart, it's Norman's keen observances and poignant style that draw you in, and make you care how it all happened. Yes, the end was unhappy -as most break-ups are. But the feeling at the end is never bitter and never cynical.
I enjoyed how Norman breathed life into the years when the Beatles were touring and recording. You can almost hear the banter down in Studio One at Abbey Road, or the arguments at Apple, or the wind-bitten playing at the rooftop gig. The subtitle, "The Beatles in Their Generation", is an apt description of the world described in this book. Whether it's a particular street in London, a cheap dive in Hamburg, or the sumptuous apartment of some pop star, you understand the Fab Four's presence and influence throughout.
Although McCartney was treated somewhat as the "villain" who caused the split between the Beatles, I don't see a real hatred on the part of the author. All the Beatles get their share of scrutiny, and Norman brilliantly and gently reveals the greatest rock band as being, simply, human. Anyway, fans of individual Beatles will know the real McCoy after so many years. "Shout!" was written soon after Lennon's death; it's natural that the book is something like a tribute to him. As a documentary of four incredible lives and eight tumultuous years in the 1960s, "Shout!" reads like you are there.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fascinating - The Bible of Beatles biographies!, 15. August 1997
The story of the Beatles' rise to fame has probably been chronicled in hundreds, if not thousands of books all over the world. Why is Phillip Norman's "SHOUT!: The Beatles in Their Generation" different? This is one of those rare books in which the author, while praising his subject, is not afraid of showing the Beatles as human beings, with virtues as well as flaws, strenghts as well as weaknesses.

Philip Norman gives an astonishingly well researched account of the Beatles' life story, focusing briefly but thoroughly on each of the four musicians' childhood and adolescence, and in more detail on their early struggles and their world-wide success, their break-up and their evolution as people and musicians. This book is a fascinating read, both for the casual rock fan and the most die-hard Beatlemaniac. Without a doubt, "SHOUT!: The Beatles in Their Generation" is the Bible of Beatles biographies, and a book no true Beatles fan should be without.

There are probably factual errors in here, there are books which examine the Beatles in more detail, there are other points of view. And of course there is always the music, stupid.
This book's achievment is it's first and last quarters - wishing and wasting. Close your eyes after any part of the first quarter and you are in Liverpool, scrambling frantically to learn a chord, fix an amplifier, get a gig, find a drummer, get to Hamburg, cut a record, DO IT NOW.
Skim through the middle bits with the numbers getting larger, the crowds louder and the songs less joyous. Go straight to the end where Norman describes Apple Corps falling to pieces even as the best music of all was providing the soundtrack to the end of a love affair. Not ours with them, but theirs with each other.
There have only been two truly important bands in rock and roll. Norman provides ample evidence of the Beatles being the best of the two. The other .... you figure it out.

4.0 von 5 Sternen If your name's not Paul McCartney you'll enjoy this bio., 16. März 1997
Von Ein Kunde
Just when I thought I couldn't cram any more Beatle lore
into my cranium, I read Philip Norman's biography of the
four lads.

The story of the Beatles is known worldwide and I'll not
repeat any of it here, except to say that Norman gives
each phase of the group's life and career equal time and
equal detail. Showbiz bios too often linger on an act's
childhood and background (to prove that they've researched
extensively?) or are simply a cash-in on current success
and add nothing to the story that one couldn't get from
People Magazine (see bios of Selena, etc.).

If the book has a fault, it is that Norman has obviously joined the "John was the real leader and only decent songwriter" camp and takes swipes at McCartney's personality and music early and often. This is another subject that has been covered ad infinitum, and I will add only that this bias detracts my overall rating of this otherwise excellent and detailed work.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fasinating insight into the Beatles, 23. März 2000

(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent book for both die hard Beatles fans and those who are simply interested in the phenomenon that swept the world in the 60s and still continues to exert influence over modern music today.
The author frankly admits that he has never actually iterviewed any of the Beatles, but many great historical books have been written without access to their subjects, and in my opinion this has given him a unique view of the group's influence on the era, rather than a perspective from inside it. All the interesting things are there - Paul meeting John, the American tour, Apple, break up etc, and fasinating it is.
If you like their music or damn them as madness from the 60s, the fact remains that they were hugely influential in areas ranging from pop music to advertising, and this book paints the picture very well.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Different perspective arguing against Paul bias, 24. Oktober 1998
I'm surprised that ppl so far thought that the book was biased against Paul. I'm not the greatest when it comes to picking up tone, but Maybe I'm Amazed that the reviews so far could Imagine that the author rips on Paul. Even tho he praises John a lot, I think, if anything, the book is biased against him. I am a new fan, and love Paul, but it is widely known that he could be controlling. The author narrates how Paul wanted to go on performing live, while John was so into Yoko that he couldn't see the Beatles' interests anymore. That's just one example. Anyway, the book is great, and I just wanted to provide a different perspective. I just finished it, and if anyone wants to discuss it, e-mail me.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Exceptional lives in interesting times, 14. April 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Not only is this thoroughly researched biography a thorough portrayal of the personalities of perhaps the most musically and culturally pop phenomena of the latter 20th century, it offers an excellent perspective of culture and society in Britian and the US. It's a well written analysis that's worthwhile reading for fans of the Fab Four and those who wonder what all the fuss was about. Good history and a great read.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Better than average, 15. Juli 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Norman did a good job with this concise, basic biography. He tends to dwell a bit much on bit players and business deals, but he's certainly done his homework. Certain brief passages, like the ones about what the Beatles did after they finished touring in 1966, are magically written. I recommend this as a good beginner's overview of the group's history.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Well written and research, but you have to wonder...., 2. Dezember 1998
Norman's done his homework, and this is a truly fascinating and detailed account of the Beatles. Still, one has to wonder if Norman actually likes the Beatles, on several occasions he seems to revel in reporting sordid episodes and Beatle pet peeves that, while interesting to note, don't always seem relevant. All in all, one of the better accounts.
