Moon Dawntreader Summer is a holy woman of her people - a mysterious sibyl, keeper of ancient knowledge. When she is accidentally removed from her planet of Tiamat, she discovers that the Galactic Hegemony purposefully keeps her planet in a technological stone age. Moon must return illegally to her planet to free her people and rescue her onetime lover, Sparks, from the clutches of the evil Snow Queen.
Some great themes are explored in this Hugo-winning novel. The tension between primitive and technological societies is central. In addition, Joan Vinge writes about the conflict between duty to government and duty to oneself, and creates some fine science fiction style mysteries for the reader to ponder while awaiting the climax of the book.
I thought the plot of this book moved a bit slowly, with too much time spent describing the angst experienced by most of the main characters throughout. In addition, the writing style was a bit too simplistic for my taste, with too much about the world being explained by the author before I had a chance to really wonder about what was going on. I think that younger science fiction readers would really enjoy this one, but those who have read a lot of sci-fi or prefer harder, more technically-driven writing would probably find it slow. Those seeking more "literary" sci-fi should probably avoid this book as well.
Still, the book has its fans and a great following, and was recommended to me by someone whose opinion I respect. I'm sure The Snow Queen deserved its Hugo Award in 1981, but it's just not my cup of tea.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Don't bother, 1. März 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Snow Queen (Taschenbuch)
I was going through the Hugo list, and unfortunately this was one of the very few remaining titles I did not read yet. I have no idea how this book won Hugo award, they must've had a shortage on science fiction novels in 1980 or they might have just given it for great efforts in trying to rip-off Herbert's Dune and Ursula Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness.(not to mention the "Snow queen" title) Usually, the sci-fi books lack good writing, but they have, especially Hugo award winners, good plot along with decent or better scientific input. This book does not have either. The characters are all one dimensional, and it actually feels like they are all the same person. This is arguably the worst "science fiction" novel I have read in years ( for certain, the worst Hugo award winning book I've read), and I've read tons of them. This book is not for any science-fiction reader, who's read more than 3 books in the genre. If you read a lot of romance novels or watch soap-operas on basic TV during the afternoon hours, this book is for you. Otherwise, do not bother.I actualy wish I could give it zero stars. If you plan on reading all Hugo winning books, save this one for the last.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Flabby melodrama, 2. Mai 1998
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Snow Queen (Taschenbuch)
Although epic in size and complications, this book fails to deliver on almost all accounts. The characters are like paper puppets, jerked around unconvincingly as the author drags them through scene after overwritten scene. It's too bad--a decent SF plot is dragged down by poor writing and soap-opera romance. My vote for the silliest, most-contrived scene goes to chapter 33, when a female teenage nomad who has captured two of our heroes (and has, ridiculously, been keeping them along with a variety of wild animals in a personal "zoo" in her tribe's cave), decides to let the good guys (and some of the creatures) go free, because...well, we don't know why, really. It doesn't make much sense; she has just killed one of her brothers after he tried to rape the heroine, so we guess that she has a Good Heart after all, and has learned from these Good People she's kept hostage. If you're looking for epic planetary romance, read DUNE (Frank Herbert), HYPERION (Dan Simmons), ARISTOI (Walter John Williams), NEVERNESS (David Zindell), or A FIRE UPON THE DEEP (Vernor Vinge). Stay away from THE SNOW QUEEN.

The idea of the changing from Winter to Summer, the sybils, the mers...all these are wonderful rich ideas, that should be taken further. I found the major problem was the writing style and "coincidence" factor which was streteched to far at times. Motivation also needs to be looked at, reasons should relate to action! But the ideas are here..unpredicitability does happen, and it is worth reading. Vinge can write, but I feel that this would have been a much more effective and slick tale if the "epic" feel had been left aside, and the concentration on the charcters and thier motivations without ultimate recourse to "conincidence" would have been unecessary. It is a nice read, but not a classic.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Imagination I'd like to see come to life!!!, 22. September 1998
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Snow Queen (Taschenbuch)
I first read this book as a young, impressionable freshman in High School. Since then I have read and re-read it. As I've grown up I have changed in many ways, but this book still brings me back to those fantastic days. It is an amazingly visual book. The characters, the world, the languages, both emotional and physical spoken by Joan are vivid, captivating and memorable. During my re-readings, I have many times imagined this book and it's sequal, The Summer Queen, come to life on the big screen. The story is very adaptable to that medium with high adventure, romance, amazing costumes and characters, classic good vs. evil.... I think it would be a simply wonderful movie, whether written for a young audience or a more mature one. Anyone agree?

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great one when you want a book you won't want to put down, 5. August 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Snow Queen (Taschenbuch)
I just finished 'The Snow Queen' last night and have spent much of this evening rereading sections I particularly liked. I only do that with books I really enjoy. The characters were well-developed and had personalities that could be identified with, the pace sped up at the right rate and the setting and story felt realistic. There was some philosophising and moral messages, but it didn't go over the top like some sci-fi does. And although the scene is set for a sequel, I didn't feel like I was left hanging like in many sci-fi series books. This one was complete with the key questions answered. A great read when you want a book you can get lost in and you have the time not to put it down.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A storytelling genius at work, 13. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Snow Queen (Taschenbuch)
A writer with Joan Vinge's talent crosses all genres because she has that unique ability of writing a story about PEOPLE. Her sci-fi rendition of Andersen's Snow Queen is phenomenal. Its got fascinating elements of sci-fi: a fallen Empire, dozens of cultures and races, twin suns, century-long seasons, and corruption of immortality.
Its brimming with eye popping oohs and awwws; Vinge twists the scientific into the fantastical. Her characterization evokes genuine interest in their lives and struggles. She's become my favorite author since then. I just wish she'd get back into writing - though I understand genius can not be rushed.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An exciting world to visit, 5. Mai 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Snow Queen (Taschenbuch)
The many regions of the world of Tiamat were so well described that I still remember them, even though I read this book while in high school. Even minute details stand out to make this world seem real.
Even more important, however, I still rememember the characters -- both good and bad and ... undecided.
Was the heroine "too good to be true"? Maybe so. But in this book, I wouldn't have it any other way. Another type of heroine would not have suited this book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great book; an anthropologist's view of the future, 5. Juni 1997
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Snow Queen (Taschenbuch)
I loved this book. As an anthropologist and an archaeologist, I thought it presented an insight of what it would be like for a culture, trying to evolve against the will of technologically superior neighbors. I have read the book at least ten times, and always find nuances to the characters I hadn't noticed before
