5.0 von 5 Sternen For all parents with children of all ages
Gavin de Becker writes an eye opening book about how parents need to be more involved in the safety of their children. I have always considered myself a diligent parent. But the author's blueprints for checking the depth of the water or checking for a clearly marked path through the woods taught me several lessons. Relying on intuition is a major theme here. But,...

1.0 von 5 Sternen "The Gift of Fear"...rehashed
I am a big fan of Gavin De Becker. I found "The Gift of Fear" helpful, intelligent and, often, frighteningly insightful. I have recommended it many times. That said, I am sad to report that I think it extremely misleading to present "Protecting The Gift" as a new book. Anecdotes aren't just warmed over, they're served up word for word. Whole...

This is a great book. For any new parent (as I am) or for anyone with kids, this book provides some very practical steps to take to protect your kids. It is as good as his first book.

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Protecting the Gift (Hörkassette)
I am a big fan of Gavin De Becker. I found "The Gift of Fear" helpful, intelligent and, often, frighteningly insightful. I have recommended it many times. That said, I am sad to report that I think it extremely misleading to present "Protecting The Gift" as a new book. Anecdotes aren't just warmed over, they're served up word for word. Whole chunks of chapters are identical to the first book, with only subjects changed to refer to parents and children rather than to adults. I rushed to buy this book and my advice is, if you have the first one, don't bother. As honorable as De Becker's mission seems to be, I'd say his editor and publisher are responsible for a pretty major consumer rip-off. Only the appendices seem new

3.0 von 5 Sternen Some good advice mixed with odd political opinions, 6. November 1999
Von
G. Mitchell "." (Woodinville, WA USA) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
(REAL NAME)
Practically from birth, children are told to look for police when they are in danger. de Becker suggests that frightened kids in public places instead seek help from the nearest woman: women are naturally nurturing, protective and a lot easier to find than cops, he explains.
This nugget is typical of de Becker's advice, which though sometimes offbeat or unexpected, nevertheless makes sense.
Many examples illustrate situations when ignoring intuition or abandoning common sense can lead to disaster. Leaving curious teenage boys at home with unlocked guns ranks high on the list.
Despite the good advice the book has two shaky assumptions. The author states that "nearly 100 percent of sexual predators are heterosexuals". Who then is assaulting the 30% of child victims that are boys? Soccer moms? This conclusion appears to be biased to ignore reality.
The author presents a tilted view of defense using firearms. He finds no reason to use firearms to stop a violent intruder. Odd.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Worried about your Children? You will be soon., 20. August 1999
Von Ein Kunde
If you don't already worry enough about your children, you will after the first chapter of this book. For those parents who trust their instincts, try not to worry about everything, are not overly protective, but teach their children how to be safe in an unpredictable situation, this book just might scare you into worrying about things you never thought you had to worry about. Recognizing that this was not DeBecker's intent in writing, but you may only be able to read a few pages at time so as not to cause a nightmare.

I read this book because I thought the subject sounded interesting...
How wrong i was....
Gavin De Becker Suceeds not only in feeding the irrational fear and paranoia, he also does this in an extremely superficial manner. This book skould be listed under the "Exploting irrational fear for bucks" section.
It seems like hte author is a skilled writer in the pop-psychology genre.
