Von Daniken masterwerk which has been debunked in so many ways that I find it incredible that publishers still have the nerve to print it. I was into UFO's and the like when I was a kid and even then I didn't believe this. One thing that even my child's brain could see was that he criticises archeologists at every turn, yet quotes them as gospel if they happen to support the point he's currently making.
There's a desert photo of what looks like an airplane parking lot in one of his books. He tries to show that alien space-craft used this. In reality this pattern is only a few yards long and may have been of use to toy spacecraft. When challenged by a TV documentary team about this, and other issues, Von Daniken vowed to correct future editions. He didn't do it.
I'll bet that photo is still there - along with the other misrepresentations.

Actually, I thought the "shocking theory of prehistoric UFO visitations" was first advanced by Captain Kirk in the Star Trek episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?", but that's neither here nor there.
I first read this book immediately after watching the TV film he had produced, complete with awe-inspiring background music and grandiloquent narration. The vast majority of the "evidence" he cites only vaguely--if at all--suggests rehistoric visitation by aliens. Worse, Von Daniken seems to believe that early human civilizations were incapable of putting one brick on top of another without alien assistance. On the other hand there are a few compelling exceptions, like the "astronaut" paintings in southern Algeria.
All in all it's a fun read, but don't take it too seriously.

When Aliens are mentioned people look around for the crazy guy who mentioned the "A" word. That subject gives people discomfort and a sense of skepticism. Daniken presents, in laymans terms his theory of Paleo-Seti. There is enough evidence to state that there is some validity in the book. From almost every culture have gods that decend from the sky and give Knowledge to the masses. There are buildings all over the world that couldn't have been built by such a primitive cultures Giza for one or almost every Maya Building ever created. Scientist hold on to there Dogma of how the world should be of course because we know everything about the past. We know that MAN is the greatest thing ever to exist. MAN is master of his domain nohing out anywhere is better than MAN. But to open minded people who can't find very much wrong with his book fall upon ridicule from the very people who should be interested in finding facts...Scientists. I know this book is hard to swallow what it says to me is we aren't alone, and we never where. Dogma is hard to overcome by any means No matter what you clucth when your faith is tested a cross or an beaker, There is more in heaven and Earth than we will ever know.

The book is ridiculous, absurd and deserves our attention if not for the simple fact that serious people are paying attention. Mr Von Daniken knows how to peddle ideas and I wish were his publisher. Press on oh nobel soldier of the absurd!

I think its an interesting way of looking at some of the unexplained events of the past cultures - If you want to read a book about ancient cultures then this not the book for you - but if your a little more adventurous and dont have a problem with accepting or at least suspending disbelief then try it - Its worth it - Another title on the same subject is a book called "Gods of the new millenium" by Alan F. Alford - this is a better book by all means and if you can get your hands on this one then you can truly appreciate what both the writers are trying to say - basically not for the weak minded - It gives you something to think about and you can bet its different.

If humanity believed in this book then man's life on earth may better many times. This book is really spiritual in a great sense. It throws the old and traditional idea within the human mind framework of the so called high values of religion and its practices, to dust. I admire that because those values are really faulty and that religion is prejudiced today, be it Chritianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism or any other religions (I myself am Hindu)! If you want to know why, then read this book. It came out of a Swiss man, if i am right! That is interesting for me to know too and i would try not to forget this book when i die.

Thisis an excellent book, as are his others. Remember thatbelieving in the Bible is just as big of a leap as believing Danikens thoughts. Many aspects of the Bible are true, but not all. Many of the things have been proven false or are speculation. Check Exodous 19:18, this is when Moses is about to receive the ten commandments. Very intresting that God must come down from the sky, and on top of that with fire and smoke blazing all over the place, sounds more like something else to me. I recommend any of his books to people who are intrested in learning the truth behind our past.

Traditional archaeology is being proven mistaken in its assessments of man's early history on an almost daily basis. However, Von Daniken's wild speculations about alien intervention detract from the work of "outsiders" to the dominant paradigm who combine real scientific investigation with fresh outlooks on discovering man's true history. For an intelligently researched and viable inquiry into lost civilizations read ATLANTIS IN AMERICA: NAVIGATORS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD by Ivar Zapp and George Erikson.

As you can note if you look at the former reviews: Persons that read this book or love it or hate it! There is no midle term: Or you rate this book five 5 stars or 1 star! Personaly, I rate this book 5 stars because it is (at least!) a very stimulant speculative book. Anyway, there are in this book hundreds of perplexing questions that will make you think about the possibility of Erich's speculations be right. He shows too many coincidences and amazing facts. This book can open your mind indeed.

I read this book at an impressionable age and was filled with wonderment. This inspired me to ask "What if?" and I undertook much self study to pursue my quest for knowledge. Slowly I realized that Von Daniken struck while the iron was hot with several works pushing this topic. I thank him for pushing me into studying cosmology, astronomy, and physics so I could realize his theories were just entertaining tales that made him money.
